The face of that success was on Capitol Hill yesterday—in the form of 4-year-old Joseph Davis, Jr. He had sickle-cell anemia, and doctors did not hold out much hope for him. But his mother and father had been informed of the value of banking umbilical cord blood stem cells, and when their second child was born, they were able to take those stem cells and transplant them into young Joseph.

Today, he's healthy and lively and cured of sickle-cell anemia.

"Not going to the doctor no more and looking at him saying he's healed from the disease" is a great feeling, his mother, Darlene Davis, said. "No more medication, no nothing. And I'm at peace now."

I don't see why this sort of thing wouldn't be just as good with embryonic stem cells. (And of course embryonic stem cells have the added benefit that you can cook up as much as you want.)

You do the best you can with what you have. The more possible options, the better. It's good news regardless, at least the patient in question might think so.

Stem cord cells do provide a lot of hope for treatments. The stem cell research ban that the GOP advocates will create a booming medical industry for Europe and Asia (and hopefully Canada). Although lots of research still needs to be done, there seems to be a lot of promise for stem-cells.

I'd like to see some facts to back this up, unless this is just your crystal ball.

Bush was the first to fund it: Funding before 2001 was $ZERO.

Bush passed no restrictions at all on the research itself.

I know the President supports a ban, but was unaware the GOP had taken a position.

Could you provide evidence or a link? If you're correct about the GOP, I feel the need to make my displeasure known (as I have already with Bush)...

Being a profoundly intelligent logitian, I used inductive logic to "assume" anything Bush supports is automatically supported by the GOP.

I will turn in my RNC membership card and say nothing more about the topic.

Fumento may not be to everyone's taste (he's fairly right wing...) but he has published several articles which point out that adult stem cells (such as cord cells, etc.) have been very successful in treating diseases, while embryonic stem cells have failed. (Even though Bush 'banned' funding for embryonic stem cells, there is enough research into them around the world that you'd expect at least SOME success in their use...)

True... of course, there is also the problem of limited resources. With few dollars to go around, the government and private industry has to decide where to best spend their money. I personally would like them to spend it in the area that has the best potential return.

(Note: I do support a woman's right to choose, and I have no problem with the use of embryonic stem cells; I just want to make sure we don't waste money on them when adult stem cells are just as effectective.)

Ok.... start harvesting.
