Congo's War Legacy

Sickening. Surely there must be something the world can do to combat these militias? If we dont, it seems like parts of africa are going to commit sui-genocide.

1. Who is this "we," paleface?

No one can say why. The answer is almost too awful to consider, and impossible to understand.
Too awful to consider? How so? The Interhamwe was bent on genocide in Rwanda, and didn't use industrial methods to do so. One bullet, one machete, at a time. Human behavior at its basest.

This sort of hateful treatment of another human being is what the term "evil" is aimed at conveying. Consider also how some of the more notorious serial killers treated their victims, and one can see that the potential for the horrific is not confined to Africa.

Note:

Rape was fairly common during the Medeival times in Europe, along the lines of "to the victor belongs the spoils." I am not sure if the extra step of further damaging the rapee so badly was common. Voltaire does use the turn of phrase "cut open her belly" in describing a rape scene in Candide, so perhaps this isn't uncommon among blood and lust crazed, undisciplined armed thugs.

So long as the perp looks at the victim as "they, the other" the dehumanizing mind set can, if not checked by a moral code, proceed to some foul ends.
