Here's the latest fad health/food research:

Drinking coffee may help prevent colon cancer, according to a group of researchers in Germany. They identified a potent antioxidant compound in the popular brew that appears in animal studies to boost the activity of phase II enzymes, which are thought to protect against colon cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States.
You'll pardon me if I ignore this study, just like all the other fad health/food studies.

You can have your coffe any way you like but I prefer my coffee to go in the other end.

Healthy diet according to the latest researchs:

Pizza
Beer
Wine
Coffee

Add to this the discovery that frequent masturbation reduces the risk of prostate cancer, and you´ll find out that staying at home eating pizza, drinking beer and masturbating is a healthy way of life:wink8:

the fact that i'm alive and healthy at nearly 23 years of age is a testament to this lifestyle.

"Until human studies are done, no one knows exactly how much coffee is needed to have a protective effect against colon cancer," says Hofmann. "However, our studies suggest that drinking coffee may offer some protection, especially if it's strong." For example, expresso-type coffee contains about two to three times more of the anticancer compound than a medium roasted coffee beverage, he says.

Whooooo Hoooooooo!!!
YeeeeeeeeeeeHAAAAaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!

(Doing a little Whomp happy-dance)

Life...
is now officially perfect.

Whomp!
(Runnng to fire up the espresso machine)

P.S. - I can't believe they missed the spelling error on espresso. Science Daily must not be able to afford a spell checker.

The local Pizza man has a new additive for his pizzas - sour cream. Perhaps he knows something. :D

I'd like to see how much of this stuff is needed to have an effect on my future probablity of cancer, and how much is supposed to be in coffee.

And no thanks, I'll pass on the coffee enema. Especially if the coffee is still hot.

:D

The coffee I've been making recently is more likely to cause, rather than cure, cancer.
I've bought an espresso machine (a very cheap one) and so far what comes out runs the gamut from a thin watery gruel that you might find in a pothole after a rain to a sludge more reminiscent of paint remover (or oil that's been in a hard-used engine for a long time) than the nectar of the gods it's supposed to be.

Does this sound right? I would think that the darker roasts would have less than medium/light roasts since they are rosted longer. Or is it the filtering of normal brewed coffee that causes the loss?

On the down-side...

I noticed that a medical column in the UK newspaper The Sunday Telegraph this weekend mentioned that coffee can cause a loosening of the anal sphincter, resulting in leakage...

I'm still doing the equivalent of 10 cups per day - wish me luck.

Espresso has nothing to do with the degree of roast. Yes, a lot of espresso is dark roasted, but my personal preference is for a lighter roast to get the high notes of the varietals.

Anyway, espresso forces hot water through the beans, which extracts more from the bean than the coffee brewing process does. Based on the quote, I assume the beneficial chemicals are more fully extracted as well.

I wonder where Turkish Coffee fits in. My all time favorite is with corriander and just a touch of rose water (mmmmmmmmmm).

I better watch out, the Dept. of Homeland Security is going to question me for drinking suspicious coffees.

Anyone here see "Sleeper" by Woody Allen? A health food store owner in the 70's wakes up 500 years later and finds out smoking, alcohol and cigarettes are actually healthy. Funny stuff.

Maybe they meant coffee enemas can cause this.

Hmm. Well, the fact that caffeine causes your body to fetch calcium from your bones is not a good trade off to using it to prevent cancer, not even colon cancer. Eat fiber. No, drinking milk or whatever with the coffee does not deter caffeine's affect on the body.

Will look up stuff for you all to read on this, but I will stand by the fact that dinking grape juice is better for you than red wine, and decaffeinated coffee is at least better for you than espresso.

Please scuse any spelling errors, cause I'm really tired.

It is the caffeine in coffee which makes it addictive, and which accounts for most of the known adverse effects of coffee. However, there are hundreds of other chemicals in coffee. Caffeine is a carcinogen, but coffee contains numerous other ones, created by the high heat of roasting, such as creosote, pymdine, tars and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The darker the roast, the greater the potential hazard.

I think I found the anti-caffeine site:

I can't find the exact feedback system when it comes to caffeine causing calcium to be leeched from bones...but you can look around and see it stated on the site a lot.

I'm to lazy to quote my biology book tonight...unless I have to.
