Will someone please explain to me the benefit to society in cloning pets?

Sure, a pet owner is devastated when little Toby passes away. But do you really need to clone another little Toby for $50,000? Just go by the local pet store, or better yet the local animal shelter, and pick out an existing pet.

Couldn't a better use be found for that $50,000?

I agree with you..We have millons of homless pets in the streets starving and needing shelter and homes...And there are people CLONING pets? What the heck?

If anything should be cloned,Then clone some Endangered animals.

Or Extinct if science permits.

But housecats?pfft

Yep, hair raisingly frivolous.

I do hope some good comes of it with the knowledge gained from the experience.

I'm hoping my heart can some day be cloned, or a kidney, should I ever need a replacement.

Anyone else reminded of Re-Pet from "The Sixth Day", but yes I agree that the money could have been better spent cloning extinct species, Dinosaurs for one (just kidding), but seriously things like the Tasmanian Tiger that we wiped out, or the silverback gorilla that is nearing extinction (which would also be a step along the line to human cloning for organs, and a universal blood supply, which would save so many).

Which brings up an interesting question, Jehovahs Witness' (iirc) cant have blood transfusions thanks to their reading of the bible, does that mean that they couldn't accept a cloned organ (ie cloned of themselves)?
Technically it wouldn't be introducing a foreign blood source into them, but metaphorically it would be because it isn't originally their own.

The only benefical thing I can think of that could come from cloning is probably cloning myself thousands and thousands of times over.

I would first need some type of way to speed up growth,So that I could have a million versions of myself at adult size in a few months.

Then I conquer the world.

Hah, define "I"!!!

I've got a horrible suspicion that if I had to put up with even one more of me, I'd probably murder myself. :D

Sure, but people have a right to spend their money the way they want to..

Do you not indulge yourself in any luxuries that others might find frivolous? It's all a matter of degree..

Seems selfish to me to waste money on food for any cat , when there are children ( and dogs ) going hungry.
