Cleansing Religion from the Public Square

The LA county board of supervisors voted to remove a small cross, symbolic of part of the history of LA, from the county seal. They also voted to remove (get this!) the Roman goddess Pomona, replacing her with a female injun. All this after a threat from the ACLU. Government may not establish religion. Like the appearance of Pomona gives the imprimatur of LA county on the ancient goddess, thus stiking terror in the hearts of non-Pomonists everywhere that they will be dragged, kicking and screaming, to the temple of Pomona, and forced to sacrifice a cat? :D

Hows the racist trolling business doing lately Pat?
Got anything useful to contribute to this thread, the fool? Like observations about where you think the boundaries should be between church and state?

I'm normally in agreement with the ACLU on church vs. state cases, but this is a tad silly in my opinion. The cross represents a legitimate part of the Catholic churches influence on the history of California and Los Angeles. Not sure where Pomona comes in, but I suppose one must be consistent?

YA know what. IM GLAD! Its about time the non religious became as obnoxious as the religious. For eons we've been beaten over the head with constant public reminders of religion. NOW THE TABLES HAVE TURNED!!! How do you Jesus freaks like 'dem apples!:p

I personally think monuments to the US constitution should replace any religious icon placed in a public area for the sake of religion.

We had a controversy here in Houston where a bible was removed from a court building. But the bible itself was a tribute to a person for whom the Bible was a significant representation. It could have been a cocker spaniel.

In the case in Houston, where the religious item represents a person, I am cool with it on govment property.

If it is some statement about the religious nature of the US, it is unwarrented, inaccurate, and unconstitutional.

I say replace it with a shrine to the US Constiitution.

IS anyone aware of any non-judeo christain public religious thingys???

I ask cause its the judeo-xians who flip out when religion is removed from the public, but they also flip out when there's somthing thats not to their pias likeing. Im thinking the kooks who complain about Holloween and the high schools "Red Devils" nickname.

Troublesome pagan symbols on state seals:
  • California - Minerva, Roman goddess of wisdom
  • New Jersey - Ceres, Roman goddess of grain and abundance
  • Virginia - Virtus, Roman goddess representing virtues of heroism, righteousness, freedom, and valor...*
...plus her left boob is hanging out...

And she's perched on the corpse of someone she's just murdered. That's pretty cool for such a crummy state.

I think the whole church/state thing could be solved by deifying the state like the Romans did--create a goddess "America" and then we can have as much religious symbolage on seals and courthouses as you like --as long as it's to the state goddess. It's something for everyone: religion for the religious, patriotism for the patriotic, and something to laugh at for everyone else.

Yeah, but then the gummint would say "'Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and unto God what is God's...' means you have to give us all your money."

Since neither Caesar nor God are part of the government, it wouldn't apply.

I didn't know the LA county seal was in the form of a square. I thought it was round...

What do you think would be the attitude of injuns to pats opening post? How about nignogs darkies or wetbacks? I guess when you are not one of Pats targets its easy to just play nice with the racists.. Why do you think pat uses terms like injun except as racist trolling? open your eyes.

Well actually some of us agnostics "flip out" when we observe the widespread brushing off of fundamental rights - although I am not immediately harmed, I know that the next right to be brushed off may affect me directly.

Well, that was actually eloquent and made sense. Good post.
