Chiro and Ear Infections

There's a new ad on the radio here in Iowa where a chiropractor claims "new" evidence exists that back adjustments 3 times a week can help an ear infection in ONLY 10 days. I was thinking, does an ear infection last that long? I can't remember having one for more than a day or two, three tops. It just sounds to me like they are occupying your time (and money) while it runs it's course.

I also notice on the latest Ionic Breeze commercials that the FDA has certified that the Ionic Breeze is a newer form of air treatment. That's all. Not that it's good or effective, just newer. Am I the only one who caught that?

Sorry, this is more of a rant but I've been hearing Callerad and Prozotien (sp? for both?) constantly and now these chiropractic commercials like they are the radio station's only sponsors and it's driving me batty.

Hey, that's nothing compared to what the local chiroquack in my neck of the woods has been up to. I have a Chiroquack in my woods who has TV commercials that DO NOT say chiro-anything, he claims he is a "Board Certified Physician", who has a "Revolutionary ... and New..." method to make all back pain go away..forever..useing a technique "discovered by NASA" and hidden from the rest us us poor dumb slobs by the evil AMA (to make money) . But we first have to come to him for a "neurological evaluation" (and give him a huge amount of money no doubt) to see if you are a suitable candidate for this "revoltionary treatment"..blah blah blah blah... consider yourself luck you do not watch late night TV on the not so premium channels.... I will be writing to my State Board of Healing Arts.

Did the ad give the source of this “new” evidence?

Here’s an interesting excerpt from the American Academy of Family Physicians’ Clinical Practice Guideline on Otitis Media with Effusion (OME):

Homeopathy and chiropractic treatments were assessed in pilot studies with small numbers of patients that failed to show clinically or statistically significant benefits. Consequently, there is no research base on which to develop a recommendation concerning CAM for OME. The natural history of OME in childhood (discussed previously) is such that almost any intervention can be "shown" to have helped in an anecdotal, uncontrolled report or case series. The efficacy of CAM, or any other intervention for OME, can only be shown with parallel group randomized, controlled trials with valid diagnostic methods and adequate sample size. Unproved modalities that have been claimed to provide benefit in middle-ear disease include osteopathic and chiropractic manipulation, dietary exclusions (such as dairy), herbal and other dietary supplements, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, and homeopathy. None of these modalities, however, have yet been subjected to a published, peer-reviewed clinical trial.
