It's a long article that is unfortunately not on line but that it was published today in the Milan's daily Il Giornale in the 6th page. Gianni Baget Bozzo, priest and adviser of the Italian Prime Minister, speaks about the Frog President and his position on Iraq.
It's a long article and i've translated it as better as i could. Sorry if there could be some mistakes in the translation.
"CHIRAC WALLOWS IN THE IRAQI JAM"
France has rejected the US Secretary of State Colin Powell proposal to organize a conference for Iraq in october or november to which they should take part the representatives of the G8 and the Iraq's neighbors and then extended to Iran and Syria.
But the answer from the French Foreign Minister Mr Barnier was very clear.
He has proposed november as a date to call the conference, and it means after the US ; he has set as a French condition that the place where the conference it should take place will be the UN and not a country in the middle east as Colin Powell has proposed.
But Mr Barnier has also set a political condition: the date in which the American soldiers and the soldiers from the other countries that are at the moment in Iraq (ours included) will have to leave Iraq.
And last but not least, Mr Barnier has required the presence at the conference of the representatives of the Iraqi 'resistence', as the French like to call the terrorists.
It was not possible to give a stronger answer.
With this declaration, Mr Barnier has definitively cut the hope that his substitution with De Villepin, it would mean a re-approach of France to the western world.
The French proposal is a real paradox because it's clearly impracticable. The 'Iraqi resistence' is not a political subject that goes from the banditism to the terrorism and the moderat Arab countries agree to recognize and support the new Allawi's Government.
But the worst paradox it would be to set a date for the withdrawal of the Coalition forces from Iraq: it would mean to give free hands to the terrorists and that all the effords spent and all the young soldiers who have died there they were died in vain.
This is a condition that we can't accept.
The French answer is not a political answer but it must be meant as the French intention to prevent that this conference for a real free Iraq will take place.
It is possible that everything it will be linked to the US elections: a conference before the elections would mean a strong shot in favour of the US outgoin President, even if it was the same Kerry, before to change again opinion, to be in favour of this conference.
But we can also belive that the French contrast towards the United States is become a constant of the French foreign policy: to go against at every US proposal to assert a role for France using every political measure, being for France impossible to support one competition with the United States on the economic and military plan.
The French Government wants therefore to capitalize the strong aversion, if not hate, that the French people have towards President Bush, making the alternative to the nowadays US President, not a US issue, but an international issue.
The French-American 'conflict' it seams is become the essence of the French policy, the way to exist for France.
If this will continue, we risk to have a conflict within the western, a western against a western as it happens within the Islamic world.
But the very singular aspect is that both conflicts could be knit: it's not a secret that France has already asked the legitimation of what they call the Iraqi 'resistence', having set their participation to the conference as a condition.
But this decision has not meant for the French Government the release of their two citizen still in the hands of the terrorists, a release that we all wish, while the Italian Government adopting a firmness line has anyway got the release of the two Simonas, and the Italian Government has got this goal thanks to the mediation of the moderat Arab countries, countries to which Paris doesn't belive so much.
