The Chinese are taking the Yeti seriously.

Sorry got the punctuation wrong on that:

The Chinese are taking the yeti, seriously?

Despite the tall-sounding tales, the organisers of the latest hunt, the Hubei Wild Man Research Association, say they are serious about their expedition for which they are seeking international volunteers and £1m in funding from private organisations.

I say good luck to 'em.

I understand North American ecology and the fauna which can plausibly exist here. Bigfoot is not one of these, for a number of reasons (as detailed in various threads around this forum).

With regard to China, I lack the knowledge and education required to draw such firm conclusions. For all I know, there may very well be some kind of hairy hominid wandering the forests and mountains of that expansive nation.

So, good luck, China! Here's hoping you turn up a Yeti or twelve.

hmmm... I think it's funny they are serious about the 1 million pound funding!

Am I to understand that.." the Chinese are.."means the Government ? If they are serious about looking for the alleged Yeti, why not allocate funds for the search mission themselves, instead of looking for private investors. It will be interesting to see how many volunteers take up the challenge of looking for this creature.I'm also guessing there will be an immediate increase in sightings due to the "priming"of the past few weeks, like the increase in alleged UFO sightings in China.

I am expecting the full force of the Red Panda Effect. If this made national Chinese news, The BFRO should start a branch in China. If x% of Americans report Bigfoot after reading or seeing a news story about it, and the same ratio of sightings occurs in China, the report flow will be epic.

Is that a problem, Drew?

Only if you are concerned about false reports pouring in from all quarters.

It would seem that you are happy with all reports, even if they are the result of the Red Panda Effect?

Well, I don't know whether or not all of the reports are false....and, neither am I disturbed by the reports.

Hence....for me....it's not a problem. I see it simply as a possibility. And I consider that 'possibility/probabilty' a good thing.

Keep them reports coming! :)

Again...I don't Sweat it... I'm not concerned, or bothered, by the fact that some people falsely report...(intentionally or not)....Bigfoot/Yeti sightings. That's just the way people are...and it's a free world. So be it. As the old saying goes....sometimes you have to "take the good with the bad".

I'll take the chance that at least some of the reports are true...and run with it!

I was watching "Destination truth" and they couldn't find the yeti or an abominable snowman either. They did say one thing that may or may not have made sense. They say the Yeti may be an ancestral memory of Giganthropithicus. Tales of encounters with this hugh primate may be part of an oral tradition that is thousands of years old.

We can only hope that as they are tromping around looking for this Yeti they will take the opportunity to document all of the other flora and fauna they encounter. Many biologists would love to have unfettered access to these areas as it is believed there may be quite a few small animals, birds and plants that have yet to be documented by a trained observer.

They may be looking for an improbable creature but that doesn't mean they won't get some solid scientific results for other studies.

Is there any precendent for this? Has there ever been an expedition for a fantasy cryptid (Bigfoot, Yeti, Orang Pendek, Nessie, etc) that did result in other new species being found? I don't recall any.

Maybe the leader would gripe if any members slowly poked at flowers or beetles. We'll never find this beast if you keep stopping to look at every stinking mushroom. You are being paid to look for the Yeti.

couple of points
1. there is no such thing as ancestral memory, since the 19th century ideas of Darwin overtook Lamarckism and even then the claims made for it did not include ideas this specific
2. Gigantopithecus became extinct 100,000 years before the emergence of Homo Sapiens so an oral tradition of 300,000 years is a little unlikely
:p

China plans to shoot $15 million Avatar-like 3D film on their Bigfoot.

Given the cost of CGI this might suck.

The movie, tentatively named "Primary Zone," will cost more than 100 million yuan (about 15 million U.S. dollars) to produce, the spokesman said, adding that a Beijing-based entertainment company will be responsible for film's financing...

Since last century, more than 400 people have claimed to have seen the creature, which is said to walk upright, be over 2 meters tall and have a hairy gray, red and black body. But no hard evidence of the creature's existence has been found.

Moffat's explorations and discoveries will be revealed in the premiere of the one-hour show "Hunt for the Abominable Snowman" on the National Geographic Channel on Monday, April 4, at 9 p.m. The show is part of the National Geographic Channel's Expedition Week.

As a former bookmaker I would say that the chances are about 100000000000000000000 to 1.

The bods doing the searching just fancy a holiday at the expense of the Chinese government. I will bet that they find "evidence" of Yetis, but no actual specimen.
