Can you help me?

I'm trying to find a book that I read as a kid. I don't remember the name of the book or the author...

Here are the details that I can give you:

I would have read it sometime in the late 70's, early 80's

The book had a strong vegetarian theme.

The story was set in the future where animals could talk and humans had forgotten that they'd ever eaten meat, but then a couple discover an ancient book on butchery and decided to try killing and eating a cow (I think).

The main character was a penguin who's house was inside a giant clamshell and he had a bunch of other animal buddies who helped him in his quest to save the cow from being eaten.

Any ideas?

Cheers Cainkane1. I managed to remember the other two I was trying to recall at the gin and tonic soaked dinner party I was at on Friday:

"The Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse"
"Bogwoppit"

And due to the wonders of an iPhone and ABEbooks.com I was able to buy copies of them there and then! I hope they're as good as I remember.... :)
