Ok as something to believe in Mr. chicks are patently absurd but are they any different from any other religious myth? I mean I enjoyed reading mythology as a kid and I didn't believe in the Greek, Roman, or Norse Gods so why not enjoy Chickys mythology the same way?

I find the art work good and some of the stories are amusing. I can't quit reading him.

This one just blows me away:

http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0041/0041_01.asp

The couple:
- Travel overseas to raise funds for a hospital
- Spend 50 years in Africa helping those in poverty
- Build five schools and four hospitals
- Feed and clothe thousands
- Attribute their success to God
- Live their entire life by the Golden Rule
- Acknowledge their works are done for God
- Help people lead better lives
- Sacrifice everything to serve people in God's name
- Do everything they can to help poor people
- Trust that their good works will please God and get them into Heaven

The man:
- Kills another man in a drunken brawl
- Acknowledges that Jesus is his Saviour

God sends the couple to Hell and the man to Heaven solely based on their respective last points. How do people honestly accept that as the actions of a benevolent and just being?

Well I wouldn't worship a god like zeus who raped a woman while he was in the form of a bull. I didn't say believe in this crap I said enjoy this crap. Superman was unbelievable but kids still read the comics.

I rather enjoyed that one, too, but the logic seemed somewhat broken. I mean, the entire premise was based on the idea that the Bible predicts the future better than a fortune teller - yet nothing in the predictions had happened at the time the protagonist visited the preacher. So how did the friend know the little black book was 'always right'?

The 'strange force' emanating from the preacher was pretty awesome, too. I think Jack Chick spends most of his time imagining he has a aura of power that makes everyone nearby avoid his eyes and slowly scoot away.

I didn't mean to suggest otherwise. I'm well aware that you don't believe any of it and I always follow your links to Chick tracts and have a little chuckle. I find them as entertaining as you do.

I also enjoy listening to Fred Phelps sound-bites. You filthy Swedes! You... FILTHY... SWEDES!!

jack Chick is like an anti hero. You love to hate him.

Whenever I read his tracts, I get the uncomfortable feeling that Chick "gets off" on the hell and damnation thing.

Benevolence and justice are not the same thing. Sometimes, they are incompatible.

Benevolence would say that a person who survived without parents since the age of 8, and went on a murder spree between the ages of 14 and 17 is merely a 'maladaptive' and 'misunderstood' juvenile -- thus deserving of therapy and financial support on the taxpayers' dollar for an indefinite period of time.

Justice would say that such a person is a monster and deserving of a swift and immediate execution.

Which takes precedence in God's law? I guess that's where those infamous "Mysterious Ways" come in to play.

I think its "strange and mysterious" when god allows bad things to happen to good people.

I think that it is strange and mysterious that people actually choose to do bad things to others. Even more strange and mysterious is when other people stand by and watch it happen, and then find some way to justify the criminal act and/or blame the victim.

Why is it uncomfortable? It is blatantly obvious that Jack Chick gets off on the "hell and damnation thing". Realizing that is no more uncomfortable to me than realizing that some people get off on overt sadism.

It's uncomfortable because it generates the mental image of a wrinkled, bitter old man beating one off while moaning "ohh.. yes... yes... to the *uh* fires of hell *ohhh* with you, ohhhh... uh... ohhh...".

Very discomfiting.

Seriously, what is it with the uber-fundies and their gleeful obsession with how everyone who does not follow their specific exact version of their religion will burn eternally in horrible agony?

So let me get this straight ( and I 'm being snarky I already know about this nonsense) fundy's believe Heaven is going to be full of murders and thieves who get saved, preachers who bilk there congregations, the Pat Roberson's of the world and so on.
Hell will be populated by people who did good but did'nt fit the fundy mold, Einstein, Salk, the Hindu's and whoever else. Lets face it most people live descent lives but most of them go to hell to.
If they really believe that that would make your run of the mill christian fundamentalist, a truly evil, vile being.

bad things happen to people even when no human being causes the problems. Diseases and accidents happen too.

For the sake of argument, I am willing to concede that capital punishment falls under the philosophy of justice, but I am going to take issue with the age. As near as I can tell, only Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen execute people for crimes committed before age 18.

Do you really think justice calls for executing a 17-year-old?

See for yourself.

They are rather addictive in a comical, oddly subversive way. My favorite line is from Happy Halloween:

"No, Bobby, you MUST accept God's love gift, Jesus Christ."

Every time I read that line it just sounds...creepy.

Yes.

Which is why benevolence is such a pain.

Most Christians do not believe that.

Not sure if most fundamentalists do either -- I suspect the answer is no.

Some certainly do. And yes, "truly evil, vile being" is an excellent description of them. At least one person who posts on JREF fits that description -- his handle is 154.

I get the same gut feeling looking at a Chick tract that I get seeing photos of atrocities of WWII or rotten.com. Morbid fascination that humans can be so vile.
