Ok, as much as I don't like Evil Dick Cheney, this is a freakin' farce.

Indict him for something he did do, ok, mmm?

(reads the whole article)

Ok, it COULD be real, but I think they found a witch. Look! A witch, a witch!!!!

We shall see, we shall see.

I can't sweep-and-quote so I presume they don't want me to quote the article.

You read, you decide.

Its just what he wants. Bush cant pardon him until he pleads guilty.

Ridiculous on its face.

Sorry guys, this isn't going to be the event you've all been waiting for.

Cheney is charged with engaging in an organized criminal activity related to the vice president's investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds financial interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers. It accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and "at least misdemeanor assaults" on detainees because of his link to the prison companies.

This seems like a stretch.

For those of you unaware, McAllen, Texas is down along the Rio Grande Valley, just inland from Brownsville. Check out the standard blue/red map by county to see how blue it is. It's close to the border of Mexico. (Check Willacy County for 2008, the Valley trends heavily blue.) See how 2000 went, for example.

Per jj's comment on sweep and copy: I'll summarize parts of the story here.

What is hilarious is that the judge handing out the indictment just got out from under a year's worth of investigations into his skulduggery, to include extortion charges. He beat the rap, but he lost the Democratic primary in March. He was due to leave office at the end of this year, due to that loss. Judge Angel Guerra (Angel War in English, funnily enough) is throwing a tantrum on the way out of the office -- perhaps.

South Texas politics: ya gotta love the insanity. It gets more amusing.

The case will be presented to Judge Manuel Bañales of Corpus Christi, which is in a different county, Nueces, and a different district. (FWIW: Bañales was the judge who dismissed the charges against Guerra. ) The local district judge, Midgalia Lopez of the 197th district, Court, recused herself. She would have heard the case near McAllen, but is one of the indictees under War Angel's pen. On top of that, State Senator Eddie Lucio is among the indictees. His lawyer suggests that War Angel is trying to settle scores before he leaves office.
Ya think?
Trying to link this all to the De la Rosa case regarding the Raymondville prison is, IMO, a stretch. As jj says, we shall see.

FWIW, none of this should be confused with the events in Kenedy County, and Sarita, Texas, which is where VP Cheney went lawyer hunting a while back. That's in the barren wasteland between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande, not quite halfway to Brownsville.

The circus has come back to town, so we ought to thank Judge Guerra for his entertaining last acts in office. Last year, when his office was raided, he apparently camped outside his office with in a trailer with a horse, three goats and a rooster. Muchas Gracias, Judge, and vaya con Dios, for the amusement you have given us all.

Looks like a Carlyle Group redux. To profiteer off war/imprisonment/guns/poverty/whatever, the evil Republican$ supposedly buy a diversified fund that has maybe 0.1% of its portfolio in relevant companies. Ingenious!

Its just what he wants. Bush cant pardon him until he pleads guilty.

Sure he can, didn't Ford pardon Nixon for all crimes relating to Watergate even though he wasn't indicted for anything yet?

Cheney and Gonzo are currently under indictment. To interfere now might be seen as obstruction of justice, and subject Bush to investigation or other action for his part in it.

The new Congress may be less inclined to let that sort of thing slide.

I'd like to post a correction. Angel Guerra is an outgoing DA, not a judge. Apologies for the earlier confusion.

Lefty, I think Cheney and Gonzo will field this pop fly pretty easily. Before you get too schadenfreud happy, consider that whe the next time a company you invest in gets sued, you are held personally liable, you would have to personally divest yourself of all stocks in order to be safe.

Got any stock in your IRA? ;)

In a differt note, given the elements of the case, I never thought it was a good idea to contract out prisons. As I see it, it is purely public function to run prisons.
