This is wild. I'm trying to grasp how anyone would keep such a huge project a secret.

The part about high altitude contrails is incorrect, imo. They are always composed of ice crystals. There can be no liquid water at those temperatures. The ice crystals either persist, or sublime back into vapor, depending on the Rh. They are never in the liquid state at high altitudes, imo.

The "dripping" is a form of virga. The ice crystals are raining out of the contrail and slowly subliming back into vapor.

There is also a third type of contrail that I have only seen discussed in a few publications. Convective, I believe it is called. Initially the aircraft does not make a visible contrail. The aircraft is just below a level favorable for contrail formation. The warm air from the engines rises into the favorable area after the aircraft has passed, and a contrail can then be seen.
 
Wow. I'm relieved. I thought "aerosol crimes" meant something else. I won't have to feel so paranoid next time I go on a binge of huffing Reddi Whip and tagging subway cars.

Mmm, I haven't said they don't form ice crystals, I'm sure they do, at least after a while. Remember though, that initially the exhaust is quite warm.

Actually, the dripping part needs to be revised, because the phenomenon referred to as dripping is more complex. It can be ice precipating out of the contrail, but it can also be convection bubbles, like tiny cumulus clouds. These really go UP, but that is difficult to discern from 10+ km distance.

As for any other conspiracy theory, I see as incredibly non-credible the idea that the government, which is horribly incompetent at anything else, somehow is extremely competent at hiding large-scale conspiracies from the eager media. The concept of chemtrails is simply ridiculous, but chemtrails are also highly visible, making the idea of a conspiracy even more laughable.
 
I've always wondered why, if the government/Illuminati/conspiracy-mongers wanted to keep this sort of thing secret, they wouldn't do it at night?

Ask a chemtrail believer this question, and then watch his head explode.

Its not like 'vast conspiracies' on even an international level dont exist though. Certain governments really are evil, in some respects at least.

Contrails are visible at night under a bright moon, of course. This being my own observation after asking the question on a meteorological usenet thread.

But it would be fun to ask them the question, knowing that contrails ARE visible at night, and see what OTHER conspiracy theories they use instead of the obvious.

Am I the only one who thinks the whole chemtrail/contrail issue is nothing more than non-technical people responding to magic?
 
No, you are not the only one, Odd.

This is going to fizzle fairly quickly, as conspiracy theories go. It's just not that interesting. Contrail schmontrail. How long can stripes in the sky hold people's interest?
