Chef Paula Deen has announced that she has been diabetic for the past three years. She's been drawing heat for continuing to promote unhealthy recipes during that time. She also has signed a deal with Novo Nordisk to promote its medication.

Some health experts question the delay between the time Deen was diagnosed with diabetes and her move three years later to promote a healthier way of cooking and living.

"A more responsible approach would have been that once she was diagnosed with diabetes to really emphasize to her viewers the importance of eating a healthy diet," said Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Or, and I realise this is a wild and crazy thought, maybe people could take some responsibility for what they eat?

I agree with Anthony Bourdain:

None of that matters much to outspoken chef Anthony Bourdain, who has never been a Deen fan. He told Eater.com of her diabetes announcement: "When your signature dish is hamburger in between a doughnut, and you've been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you've got Type 2 diabetes ... it's in bad taste if nothing else."

Are they sure she's diabetic, and not actually a creature from Planet Butter? They checked to make sure it's really blood in there?

I agree w/Anthony Bordain too. :D

But Paula Deen surely is not a chef, is she? I thought she just had a cooking show.

I don't really see the problem. Why should she change to those diabetic diets on her show just because she is personally diabetic? Is there a law that you have to be able to eat what you are demonstrating how to cook?

Tomato, tomato. Once you're famous for cooking and making big money doing it, I think you get to be called a chef. I went to a fancy restaurant last year and paid big money for what turned out to be bland, truly uninspired food (I kept thinking about Gordon Ramsay screaming at people to use some salt) - the guy that made my meal gets to be called a chef, so whaddaya gonna do? :)

Unless there is someone else in the kitchen at her restaurants telling her what to do, she meets the definition of 'chef' as much as Emeril, Anthony, or Beni...

Point taken. I thought people might not know who she is without the intro.

It's not just that she demonstrates high fat/high calorie food. She was telling kids to eat cheesecake for breakfast. She promoted a high fat/high calorie diet as desirable. Bad taste at best, irresponsible, I think.

You don't have to eat the whole cheesecake, or 4 pieces, or eat cheesecake every day...

You don't have to eat 6 pieces of fried chicken every day...

Etc...

You can eat "bad food" in moderation, you don't have to eat like a pig at a trough.

Now, if she was doing one of those dumb cake shows I'd say, yeah, disingenuous at best. But she always concentrated more on the butter than the sugar. And nobody trusts a skinny cook! :D

Has she ever claimed her food was healthy? Before now I mean.
