I'm sorry to be posting this at the last minute. It's been very busy with the Joe Nickell/Benjamin Radford workshop coming up in June. Go to www.cnyskeptics.org and click on "What's New?" for more information.

"The Skeptic in the Library" May 19, 7:00 PM, Betts Branch Library, 4862 S. Salina St. (just south of Seneca Turnpike), Syracuse.

Catherine Arnott Smith, Ph.D., assistant professor at Syracuse University's School of Information Studies, last spoke to CNY Skeptics in November 2002 about the representation of alternative medical practices in medical vocabularies.

On May 19, Prof. Smith will engage the audience in a round table discussion of a problem that is simultaneously new and very old: the inclusion of controversial materials in public libraries. Controversial materials of particular interest to Prof. Smith include Holocaust denialism/revisionism, creationist literature, and alternative medical information.

At this round table she hopes to elicit opinions from skeptics and the general public about:

* the role of libraries in disseminating controversial information

* intellectual freedom and controversial information

* skepticism and critical thinking in the public library
