While millions of Catholics opposed to embryonic stem cell research were exhorted by their bishops and clergy not to vote for Kerry because Bush is opposed to stem cell research, the whole issue may be a non-issue if the following pans out:

http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46625

The breakthrough technique, written up in New Scientist this week, uses the patient's own cells (you don't even need a donor) to create stem cells.

One Catholic bishop told parishoners that if they do vote for Kerry it would be necessary for them to go to confession afterwards to be absolved.

It's getting weird out there.

And Kerry went to two black churches this weekend while the Rvereneds Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson got on the pulpits and talked about how wonderful he was.

This kind of stuff - both sides - makes me think the IRS needs to have a good hard look at these churches' tax-exempt status.

He's not correct. I can't find a formal papal stament backing him.

If you think about it, having to confess that you voted for a particular candidate isn't much more weird than going to tell your sins to (someone that is essentially) a stranger in the first place.

No kidding. Especially when the odds are, lately, that the father confessor has been up to a lot worse things than the penitent!

Im a Catholic. Let me fill you in on a little secrete. NO ONE PAYS ATTENTION TO WHAT THE CHURCH SAYS. They also tell us not to divorce, have premarital sex, use birth control, have gay friends ect..... No one gives a crap what they want us to do. They have no hand!!!! The only catholics that pay attention are the old ladies from the old country.

And only then when it is convenient.

My grandmother was told by her priest to vote for JFK because he was Catholic (Kennedy, not the priest. Well, the priest was Catholic, but you know what I meant). Despite being a very religious woman she did the opposite, because she felt God and his servants had their place and should remain firmly in it!

Jesse Jackson is no Reverend (unless he had a legal name change to include that word), and both he and Sharpton were once candidates for the same office, so I wonder how any sort of religious exemption could apply to a bunch of politicians campaigning inside a building that just happened to be used for services on other occasions?
