Fidel Castro has said he will die "with a gun in my hand", in a defiant speech to anti-globalisation activists.
In a five-hour speech in the Cuban capital, Havana, the communist leader said his country was ready to repel an invasion from the United States.

"These idiots had better not believe we're wasting our time... This country will never give up. It will never lay down its weapons," he said.

It's funny that the "anti-globalization" activists have to resort to lionizing a murderous tyrant to champion thier cause. A fact that, IMO, alone offers a glimpse into their true intentions.

Cuba is sooooooooooo 1967. I say we lift that dopey embargo. Most americans dont care anymore. What a waste of time and effort. Political pandering to a select few.

How much do we spend every year in enforcing that embargo?

Sheesh, no kidding. Are we honestly still worried about the threat of communism or Cold War escalation? Time to bury the hatchet.

What is this communism you speak of?

Why, he says with some seriousness, don't we just offer to (*&(&* BUY Cuba and make it the 51st state? I'm not sure what we would pay, since the place is bankrupt, but we could set up Fidel and his cronies in some nice place like Bagdad, I'm sure. :p

Cuba used to be a nice place. It could be a nice place again, too.

I would just like to point out that "anti-globalization" activists come in many flavors. They would obviously include anarchists, communists, America-haters, and plenty of other jerks. However, they also include rational American patriots such as myself, who have no beef with the idea of expanding free trade, increasing global prosperity, and so forth, but object to the manner in which it is being pursued--the obstruction of environmental- and labor-minded public interest laws, the dominance of corporate interests, and the secretive nature of the institutions being formed.

It is a fallacy (of composition? logicians help me out here) to suppose that because we all object to the current globalization trend, that we automatically agree with the aforementioned jerks on other matters.

This is such an elementary mistake that I cannot help but wonder if you are well aware that it is an invalid argument, but make it anyway in order to discredit those you disagree with.

Can't we START the argument assuming that neither one of us likes tyrants? If you want I'll put it in my sig, so that I say it every time I make an argument.

The minute he dies, it's total invasion by KFC, McDonalds, and Japanese cars...

He knows it.

Semi-seriously, why not! See what Fidel's price will be... First sale would be some NEW CARS! Then the gas to drive them with!

Not that they haven't been "invaded by the US" in all practicality already, really. Take a look - they accept greenbacks and Amex and have US hotels... It just needs someone with the sphericals to sign a paper to make it all legal.

And btw, that would have been a good way to deal with Baghdad too! :)

Mark my words. Disney will eventually buy Cuba and turn it into CubaWorld or something like that. They'll set up an audioanimatronic Ernest Hemmingway who will do nothing but eat shrimp with the shells on all day.

So far only the Japanese cars have 'invaded' Cuba, and they did so several years before Casto died as you can hear in this song about Chichi, who prefers Mitsubishi and Toyota to old Chevrolets:

Holy Zombie Thread, Batman!

Is 14 years a forum record?

Anyway, many of those vintage US cars in Cuba are now powered by Japanese diesels. And there are indeed quite a few modern Japanese and European cars there nowadays, especially as taxis.

You awoke the sleepinmg dead for that?

We need a "Zombie Thread" Icon.

Lol this is insane. Life was so different in 2004.

The DW reboot hadn't even started. We'd never heard of the subprime mortgage crisis, or ISIS. Smartphones weren't even a thing yet. The 2nd SW trilogy wouldn't end until the summer. Trump had just started the Apprentice. Dayamn.

Are the people who originally posted in this thread even still alive?!?

Well Gnome was still around fairly recently

I wonder how many of those old cars are still there?
(classic car collectors often pay well over the price of a new car even for rusty wrecks, and ones that are still in as good a condition as that video would probably get you in a fairly nice ride indeed...)
Cuban car owners could probably make a nice earner off that for a while (I dont know if there are even Cuban export import restrictions anymore, and given current political events, I am not sure the rest of the world would give two flying ***** if there were anymore anyway)

A few years ago I started looking through old threads of the JREF forums pre-2003 and some of the debates were almost comically basic and it was like employees at a new facility working together for the first time. It put a smile on my face though. skepticism's come a long way. :)

ETA: Did thread bumper dann expect a response?
