"My own personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids to store grain," Carson said in a 1998 speech surfaced by Buzzfeed News on Wednesday. "Now all the archeologists think that they were made for the pharaohs’ graves. But, you know, it would have to be something awfully big if you stop and think about it. And I don’t think it’d just disappear over the course of time to store that much grain."

When asked if he stands by his 1998 comments by CBS News on Wednesday night, Carson said, "It's still my belief, yes.

Oh dear....

Geez louise. Someone needs to explain to him what hieroglyphs are and what they tell us. Although I doubt that would do any good. Dude's off his rocker.

He's talking about the seven bonus years (I think seven) followed by seven lean years. The idea is storing the extra.

Still nuts though.

This is probably just the tip of the iceberg of the nonsense this guy believes. Now that he's a frontrunner everyone is going to be digging into everything he's said or written in the past. It should be entertaining.

Where would they store grain of any appreciable amount in there? The pyramids aren't hollow; rather they are made up of stone blocks stacked on-top of each-other with a couple of narrow passages and small chambers.

Hell it's even dumber than building them as impressive mausoleums since it's incredibly inefficient usage of the space and labor. Ben Carson really is an irredeemable idiot.

:dl:

As soon as the press points this stuff out to the low information voters, this guy will fall right off the polls' ledge. He may keep a narrow band of Bible literalists, but most Christians recognize stuff like this is way too loco for prime time.

He also dismisses the Big Bang and thinks the devil made fossils to trick us.

The grain thing is a very old mistake. The word "pyramid" derives from a Greek word they used to describe their own silos, because that's what the early Greeks thought the Egyptian pyramids were for. Apparently Carson's knowledge has about caught up to the time of Herodotus!

Hey he could be right! Providing that:

1.) The pyramids are made out of hollow rock. That is the only way you would be able to store any grain in there.

2.) The massive conveyor system used to load the pyramids with grain was dismantled and reused for something else. How would you fill it? Shovels? I wonder if Carson ever saw anything about grain explosions.

This is some pretty spectacular ignorance:

"My own personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids to store grain," Carson said, referring to the story of Joseph advising an Egyptian pharaoh to store grain to prepare for a coming famine. "Now all the archaeologists think that they were made for the pharaohs’ graves. But, you know, it would have to be something awfully big if you stop and think about it. And I don’t think it'd just disappear over the course of time to store that much grain."

The pyramids were grain silos!

I mean, first of all, they would make a terrible place to store grain. There's not much hollow space inside:

Ben Carson Schools Archaeologists on Who Really Built the Pyramids

I mean, I'm no expert on archeology but you only have to think about this for a few seconds to realize it makes no sense at all.

Jeez, makes sense to me.

"Looks like we're going to have a huge harvest this year. How can we store it?"

"I know. We'll build some big ineffective structures that will take a couple of decades to complete."

"and instead of raising them off the ground, we'll built them at ground level so that rats and mice have easy access"

I wish that it would make a difference but tbh I don't think that it will. IMO the reason why he's doing so well in the polls is name recognition and because voters think that he is different, he's got principles (unlike career politicians).

Revelations like this only increase his profile and reinforce the latter opinion. It's worrying but I genuinely think that unless he comes out with something which actually alienates the GOP base (and he's kooky but not that kooky) then it's all good.

Give it a week and let's see, or if I choose to be more pessimistic, give it a couple weeks.

Not the first Carson moment, probably not the last.
Speaking of, I've heard Glenn Beck commenting on Carson comparing him potentially to a Jimmy Carter choice for the Republican Party. Bases much of that on Carson's level of experience in politics and not knowing how professional politicians work, so let's see if the electorate on this side of the isle starts registering the same.

I note Glenn Beck just because...

Either way, the remarks from Carson on his own indicate enough.
