Carl Sagan's 'Cosmos' now online

Good idea, but this is technically taking episodes from various hosts all over the net and putting them together. They've all been online for a long time, just not 'officially' online. Several suffer from technical problems.

Jerks. I just spent a bunch on the DVDs and now everyone's Huluing and whatnotting.

Grrr.

Also, Sagan rulz

It's better to buy the DVD's. I just tried to watch the episode Heaven and Hell, but like the last time I tried to watch it, the synch is horribly out of place.

They do pop up now and again on the Science channel (part of Discovery network), but it seems to be rather hit or miss.

There are a few problems. First and foremost, whatever is shown on Discover or Science Channel is hacked up, since what was aired on PBS in 1980 was 58 minutes with no commercial breaks.

Second, the DVD's are not the same as what aired in 1980. First, they took out a lot of the "old-school" space footage that was done using late-70's video special effects and replaced it with pictures from the Hubble. Second, they had problems getting clearances on some of the music, in particular the 70's era "prog" music from artists like Pink Floyd, so they had to replace all that for the DVD. So what you get on the DVD is kind of like what George Lucas did to the Star Wars movies.

It's worth the effort to track down the VHS tapes that were issued in the late 80's. Check your local library or Amazon. In a perfect world someone would have AVI's taken from a clean VHS source.

I recommend watching them on Netflix or Hulu. I like the updates, because it also has updated comments from Sagan in the 90's.

The iTunes version is quite good too (except for the whole "not free" part).

I am happy to pay for the privilege to watch Cosmos. I wouldn't spend my money on crap like "Expelled" but I am happy to support the estate of Carl Sagan.

Cool. I'd like to see it again. I had the DVD's and made the mistake of putting them on ebay. :boggled:
