Cannot restore audio (or restore multimedia audio controller devices/drivers)

I am not sure when this happened exactly.

The problem is that I cannot get audio of any kind, use/update audio drivers, or even roll back to an older functioning driver for my audio device(s). I've gone through the help/troubleshoot procedures and even attempted to download new drivers. Nothing seems to be working at all.

I’m running on Windows XP Professional, 2002, service pack 2.

For some reason, my audio device is coming up under “other devices” in my device manager, and is listed as “multimedia audio controller.” It’s located at PCI bus 0, device 31, function 5.

I cannot update the driver, rollback, reinstall, or even find a driver for it online or by any other means.

Can anyone help me get audio back? I’m stumped…
 
Try removing the device and / or drivers altogether from device manager. On reboot, the "new hardware" prompt should find the device and might automatically install the drivers for you.

I still recieve the same error. It detects the hardware as usual, but the same circle of errors occurs.

Sounds a little dodgy to me. The only current chip set that I am aware of that would map anything to Dev 31 Fn 5 is either the Intel ICH 8 or ICH 9 south bridges.

Either way, it wouldn't be a multimedia device, but rather the second Serial ATA controller.

But then again, maybe I'm missing something completely...
 
Is it a PCI card or a chipset on the motherboard?

If it's a card, pull it out and plug it into a different slot. Usually this won't change anything, but I have had it happen on the rare occasion.

If it's a chipset, look up the motherboard manufacturer and get drivers from them.

Oh, again if it's a card, let us know what the name on it is. If it doesn't have one post the FCC#.
 
I went to my manufactuer's website and downloaded the drivers for my sound card directly. That seemed to have fixed the problem.
