I've found plenty of information about inaccuracies in What the Bleep Do We Know?! on quantum mechanics and happy water crystals. What I haven't been able to get much information on is Dr. Candace Pert, whose theory of emotions is promoted in the fim.

What's the story with her? How accurate is this theory? Do we actually get "addicted" to our emotions? It sounds dumb to me, but I haven't seen it debunked anywhere.

Well, I myself almost started a thread for the same reason you did some months ago. I was so curious about her theories, but it is frustrating how you cannot find anything about it other than in her books or in the movie. I would also like to read any review of her works, amazon book reviews are not so interesting in this case. If her theories are not debunked anywhere it would be that nobody could find any holes in it and (or) did not have time or curiosity to check it out further. Or...nobody seem to notice that there is such a theory being presented on a film seen by millions worldwide and that needs to be clarified and if necessarily debuked or confirmed. I´m curious about what people here may have stumbled across and will hopefully share with us.

Pert is a scientist but she is also a major woo. Read my review of her book Molecules of Emotion.

Hmm, but this is just your oppinion isnt it? You cite Shermer´s claims about smart people not being smart when they defend things that he declares war on, but nothing more.

Just a question for you who have read the book: Did she mention any results of controlled experiments about her claims? The claims you say that makes her a "woo"?

At first sight her claims do not seem sooooo far from reality as some may say. Dunno... what do you think? It would require magic nor anything so strange about our body in order to justify her claims?

She arrives at her woo opinions for no good reason I can think of. Certainly, there are no controlled experiments and no evidence to back any of them up, in stark contrast to her actual scientific discoveries described in the first half of the book.

The question you should be asking is, is there a reason to suppose her claims are true? She doesn't really give any - certainly no good evidence.

Candace Pert aka 'The woo woo in the tie dyed mumu' from that horrid What the Bleep Do We Know? movie.

She's the one who recounts the story of the Native American's not being able to see Christopher Colombus's ships because, "We only see what we believe is possible."

She actually prefaced this tale with, "A story that's told, and I'd like to believe it's true..."

Which is how all great scientists preface their claims... right?

I'm expecting to go to my grave having never heard anything more dumb in my entire life. Man I'm glad I dumped the hippie who made me watch that crapfest.

I have also read Pert's book.
I can't comment on the accuracy of the biochemistry.
I do share RichardR's opinion that about half way through, it suddenly seems another writer has taken over. I found it quite disorientating and was unable to decide if the author was very much smarter than me, very much dumber, or somehow, both.

It is an interesting read, but I'd advise it should only be read by those with enough grounding in biochemistry / molecular biology to be capable of understanding her arguments.

Possibly her Spirit Guide showed up to help her through a writer block problem.:jaw-dropp

OK, i'd heard that she was a respected scientist for awhile, but somewhere along the line she took a sharp turn into fairyland. However, I found it disconcerting that when discussing the movie skeptics liked to rag on J.Z. Knight and Masaru Emoto (the easiest targets), but avoided discussing Dr. Pert at all. I would hear friends who'd recently watched the movie wondering aloud if they were "addicted to anger" or something like that.

But, since I have very little knowledge of biochemistry, and was unable to find any information on the web that was NOT written by some New Ager, all I really had against it was "it just sounds dumb."

ETA: I didn't know she was the one with the Columbus story! Yeah, that would've made me suspicious right there.

I Hear ya. I gave up bacon sandwiches for a vegetarian woman one time, and I lived in the UK where a bacon sandwich was something. It didn't last long. ;)
