Canada fixes Mistake

I thought this pretty interesting:

"The Prime Minister went on to take the U.S. to task for its refusal to remove Mr. Arar from its watch list.

"We will not drop this matter, just because there is a disagreement and they don't like our position," he told reporters."

The photo of Arar looks like an Alfred E. Neuman, "What ME Worry?" He'll certainly have a lot less to worry about with an extra 10.5 million in his pocket.

He'll certainly have a lot less to worry about with an extra 10.5 million in his pocket.
Mr. Arar, who is studying for his PhD in a computer-related field, has been otherwise unable to work in his discipline since his ordeal.
With $10.5 million, he won't have to. Put it into tax-free municipal bonds at 5% - about as conservative an investment as you can make - and that's a cool $500,000 a year to live on.

I would guess that he would still prefer that the whole thing had never happened. Hard to argue with that.

I agree it would be better if it never happened. Most people (not all) who go after their PhDs are passionate about their field. If you know what postdocs get paid you will understand that these people are usually driven by a passion for their research. If he can't work in his field, he won't be to follow passion. That has been taken away from him.

Seriously, it is also what has happened to us...in the US. We turned someone over to Syria knowing that he'd likely be tortured if not killed. If that is what it takes to fight and win the "war on terrorism" I fear we've already lost.
