Can we have a general stupid questions thread?

I didn't want to start a thread for a question as small as mine so I thought it might be helpful to have a stupid questions thread.

How do I use Google to search for things more than two months old. I found some information that says I should just click on "show options" and select a date range, but I cannot find anything marked "show options." Advanced search allows to to show things after a certain date, but that is not what I am looking for.

Your help is appreciated.

  1. Do a search on Google.
  2. Choose the type of result you want to see, like Images or News, by selecting a type under the search box. Click More to see extra choices.
  3. Below the search box, click Search tools to see more filters you can apply to your search. The Search tools you see will be different based on your search and the filters you've already used, so you won't see all the options every time.
  4. To remove any filters you've added through Search tools, click Clear.

The bolded includes data ranges. So, to get to the tools, do any search, and then you'll see the Search Tools button just underneath the search, at the top of the page.

But he's asking for the opposite. How to search for things older than a certain date.

ETA: And while I'm here I don't think Google does that. And the various "archives" and caches don't do exactly that either. If it exists as an option somewhere, it will likely be a different search engine.

I googled "google date range search" which led me to this site which gives this option:

daterange:
This query will search within a given date and time range, but is a bit unusable because dates must be entered in the tricky Julian format. For example, the string:

beagle daterange:2455332-2455334

Will search for beagle-based articles over the last two days. Bonus link: calculate Julian dates here.

If you want to search for stuff older than 2 months, you should just be able to set the "from" date to 1 Jan 1901 and the "to" date to 19 June 2016 (in the Search Tools mentioned by Hlafordlaes above).

Is that an option that Google offers reliably? Can you post a screen shot?

I believe so. Here's a link rather than a screenshot for a search for "neutrinos" in pages older than 1-Jan-2008:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=n...dr:1,cd_min:01/01/1901,cd_max:01/01/2008&tbm=

(I had trouble creating a screenshot, sorry.)

ETA: We have screenshot:

If your ultra lazy like me you can save 3 keystrokes by entering 1/1/1 for the start date. (this assumes you don't mind including results from the start of the Common Era up to 12/31/1900 :) )

Good idea! And thanks to your OP, I now know what 'search' means on Google. When my screen reader happens to land on that word, I hear it but have never stopped to think what it means or what it might do!

But I don't see that. If I am searching "all" instead of "news" or "videos" I see a choice of two filters: "any time" and "all results." There is no clear filters option, reset filters option, and no show-more-filters option.

Ah, OK, is my problem that I am using a mobile device (iPad)?

If I search under News, I am given three filters, one of which is "recent;" clicking on that gives me a custom range option, but I think I see that only under News. How to I get the custom range option under a general web search?

MORE ETA
That "recent" filter does not give custom range option under Images or Videos.

But I cannot find the "from" field.

I get the same problem with the mobile version of google.com, unfortunately. I can see a date filter, but no custom range.

A somewhat clunky workaround which works on the Android Chrome app is to select "Request desktop site" from the browser settings menu. I'm not sure if Safari has an equivalent setting.

I sometimes use Chrome. I guess I now have one more reason to use it more frequently.

Thanks to you and everyone.

I probably should have mentioned the mobile thing at the beginning. All information must be present before a useful answer can be constructed. And I should have mentioned browser and browser version.

Thanks again.

On the plus side, there is a new thread.

It's under the "Custom range.." option here, but seems to be one of those features that aren't always present.

Yeah, there seems to be some inconsistency for some reason. Ladewig apparently doesn't get the custom date range filter for images or videos, whereas I do. One factor that may be at play here is that I usually use my local version of Google (google.co.uk) rather than google.com.

Just go to science and look for any page of current threads, I can't name names but there are 35 or so that are bound to show up and add to your collection!!!!!!!!!

Once you figure the appropriate names, any question those name will fill the bill!!!!! I do wish I could help more, but it is so impossible:eek::eek::eek: to name/identify trolls here - weirdly, not so hard in many other fora:confused::confused:!!!!!! Possibly a malfunction of the software/programming!!!!!:jaw-dropp

Hi, I am back.

I am trying to use Imgur.

I am signed in and have just uploaded a photo, however I cannot find a button that allows me add a title to the photo. But more importantly, I cannot even find a help screen. what am I doing wrong that I cannot figure out even the most basic functions of the program?

I have the same problem in the app and on Imgur.Com.

Ok, I found the help screen under change settings. Is it just me or is that a rather unintuitive place to put the help menu?

MORE ETA
I figured it out. User error arising from confusion.
