CNN said:
In protest of what it calls a religion "of the devil," a nondenominational church in Gainesville, Florida, plans to host an "International Burn a Quran Day" on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The Dove World Outreach Center says it is hosting the event to remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam. With promotions on its website and Facebook page, it invites Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Is this for real?
I googled them, along with the term "Poe's law", but didn't get the reassurance i was looking for.

This is patently absurd.. Putting on a nazi show for Jesus is really stupid.

Yup and one can only imagine how things would be if we all went and burned a bible out the front of their church

Just like burning a bible is senseless (but maybe fun), burning a koran is senseless. I just don't understand what they are trying to accomplish. Are they trying to create another Danish cartoon type riot?

Right, shouldn't burn a koran lest crazy Muslims riot over it.

Book buring is generaly viewed as being a bad thing. Apart from anything else recycling is a better option.

I suspect their intention is to prove, once and for all, which religion has a bigger concentration of ********.

Granny Weatherwax would certainly agree about the recycling. Especially books printed on nice thin paper.

Book-burning is an incredibly stupid act. It's far better to engage with ideas than to try and destroy them.

International Read a Koran day now has a facebook page. Join in with the counter-protest.

They're also homophobic. From this page:
What is homosexuality? Detestable, indecent, wicked, offensive, perverted, shameful, unnatural, degrading, impure, futile, foolish, godless, dishonorable, a lie.

No Homo Mayor Protest, August 2, 2010, 12 noon - 2 pm, City Hall, Gainesville FL

Maybe they're trying to outdo Phelps?

Thank you man, thank you. :D You made my day when I found this thread. Just reading some of the information on their website makes you want to tear your hair out. How hypocritical can you get? My religion is right and your one is wrong.

Other than increasing the sales of the book, as few of us have it, the only result will be to further inflame the already self-inflamed loons in Islam to greater horrific interactions with the west, and possibly nudge a few on the edge of going loony into going loony.

Religious people are so nuts that they have to burn the other's fictional sacred book?

That doesn't surprise me so much, actually ... and that's by no means a compliment.
