For giving the finger in his customs security photo.

I heard this this morning on the radio. The dj was making out like Brazil had gone crazy and this was some big insult to the US.

I have to say, Bravo Brazil. My first reaction is that American Airlines should fire this guy.

My second is that if we are going to demand photos and finger prints at our borders, than we should embrace/expect it at the borders of other countries.

Third, our policy may be sound...though it seems intrusive and not tightly geared for its stated purpose...but, again if it works for us, it shouldn't be condemend in Brazil.

Fourth, Brazil is doint this as a retaliatory measure, certainly. However, if we are going to unilaterly treat visitors to this country in this way -- even for possibly sound security reasons -- we're going to see other countries treat US citizens this way.

Fifth, this pilot seems to embody the arrogance so much of the world sees in the US today...is it any wonder he was jeered?

Yes indeed, Bravo Brazil you sure dish out appropriate punishment for a guy that was holding up a paper with a wrong finger. And what crime exactly was it you ask? "Police accused the Miami-based pilot of showing contempt to authorities, a crime in Brazil, and escorted him to a nearby federal courthouse for possible formal charges...The prosecutor said Hersh could have faced charges punishable by up to two years in jail." Up to two years for a middle finger. Yes, how dare that arrogant bastard do that, Bravo Brazil indeed.

How refreshing that the Brazilian police were able to take time out from executing and torturing street kids to arrest a pilot who dissed them.

Maybe Brazil can declare him an enemy combatant and detain him indefinitely.

You know, he used to be a burr buhhr buuhhs driver but he quit, .................. Too many drunk drivers.:D

By the logic of the first post (which I don't necessarily disagree with) the U.S. should jail the next Brazilian who gripes about having to wait in line to submit to finger printing for "disrespecting authority ... "

Then show said Brazilian the South Park episode with Cartman riding around on his big-wheel shouting:

"Respect-Mah-A-Thor-I-Tah !!"

Over and over ...

Hersh was accused of showing contempt for authorities — a crime in Brazil punishable by up to two years in jail.

Doesn't matter whether you agree with a law or not - if you break it, you can expect to be called on it. It's always worth checking on local laws before going to another country, in case you get caught out like that. Ignorance is no defence!

I would like to know what would happen if you show the middle finger to the police in the USA.

In the UK you might well be liable to be arrested for threatening words or behaviour - e.g. this case.

Nick Mather, prosecuting, said the fracas began when one of the Wombles in the group, Martin Brenton King, is said to have made an obscene gesture to a police van driving down Oxford Street.

In court, PC Martin Hayes said he had got out of the van and approached Mr King, who is alleged to have called PC Hayes a "fascist pig".

PC Hayes arrested and handcuffed Mr King and attempted to get the man into the police van but was forced to shelter in a shop doorway.

I though that was the Junior Peace Officer salute. Think I read it in a book somewhere, sometime...

In Germany (and most other European countries), you would be fined several hundreds to several thousand Euros for this or any other insult to police officers.
