Anyone hear about this, know anything, is it possible, likely, unlikely etc? I'm hearing rumblings and just wondering.

Could you be more specific? Are you asking if the oil gusher could destabilise methane hydrate deposits? From a position of almost absolute ignorance, I would say it's unlikely. I suppose that the accumulation of methane clathrate under the dome indicates that such deposits are usually stable at that depth, so could exist in the local sediment. But I would have thought that, since the oil is being released at the surface, and is sourced from a reservoir below the sediment, it wouldn't have an effect on any clathrate deposits that might exist there. I don't have any particular expertise in this area though. I'd be interested to hear from somebody who does.

Hard to say without knowing the specifics, but it seems that the BP oil spill is the latest event to draw the attention of the disturbed folks who just can't wait for the end of the world, or at least the end of civilization. Bad as the BP spill is, I don't see it as an end of the world event, even if they never manage to cap it.

The methane cloud you refer to has nothing to do with BP, and a lot to do with a Chili Cookoff last week ...

*ba dum tssh*

Don't forget to tip the waitresses

For that kind of methane, just visit when we've switched the dog's food - talk about "don't light a match"

I read about that on Alternatehistory.com, where it was a "you fail history forever" pile of :rule10

Ahhh yes. There's also a methane cloud in Prescott Arizona. It just blasted the neighbors downstairs I do confess...too many chilis.
