Hi.

I am trying to figure out how to eat healthy, and just get a lot of noise from the newspapers. Is there a good book for ignorant people that want to understand what is going on?

P.S. I think of becoming a vegetarian, and if the book touches on this as well - better.

Sigh. Nearly all books on this topic are products that are trying to sell you something and are therefore totally bogus. From the pseudo scientific crap of Atkins and WeightWatchers to the self promotional vegetarian starter kits of PETA.

My advice- if you have a weight problem, go to your doctor. If you can afford to see a nutritionist, do this.

Who needs a book? - "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants".
That is the tag-line from Michael Pollan's latest book "In Defense of Food." It needs a bit of explanation in that he defines food as something your great, great grandmother would recognize; i.e., no contrived or junk food.

If you're in the UK and can afford to see a nutritionist, see a dietitian instead.
In the USA, registered dietitian (R.D.) is the correct credential.

I live in Israel. And I want to understand the stuff myself, so I do want a good book.

What's to figure out?

Eat what you like in moderation, go easy on the fat and sugar, try to cook things from scratch using proper ingredients generally rather than eat processed food and get a good mix of foods.

Eating healthy really isn't a complicated topic. The vast majority of 'books' on the subject contain a lot of rubbish and are written by people trying to make $$$ off of their latest scam.

Yeah, but I think he wants to actually understand nutrition. Given that some posters have already suggested seeing a dietician, its clearly a field of study with enough complexity to it to well, require study.

There must be some books that treat the subject objectively, even if he has to read a textbook.

Some good advice in this thread. One more idea. Ask a few people who are skinny and are over 21, what they eat, and tips about healthy eating. Here are my tips
1 - Exercise is not critical for being skinny. If you do any exercise that will then increase your appetite, so may not help much in reducing your weight.
2 - Eat often (this means every 2 - 3 hours during the day), but mostly small meals.
3 - Eat a big breakfast. This means you leave the table feeling full.
4 - Whatever you eat, do not regret later. If you eat a whole mud cake then that is OK, it is a once off event and you enjoyed it, so no problem. This, or something similar, will happen to you.
5 - Drink plenty of water. Then you do not eat when you are thirsty.
6 - Variety of foods is good.
7 - If you are often hungry then blame the diet.
8 - Artificial sweeteners are not much better than sugar. They do not fill you up as sugar will. They also give you a sweet tooth.
9 - Avoid deep fried food.
10 - It is not your weight that is critical, it is your waist line.
