Bombs in Egypt, at least 45 dead

I'm supposed to be in Egypt in about 40 days....:jaw: :jaw:

I was thinking about visiting Sharm El-Shek, I have heard it has beautiful beaches and snorkeling.

Think I'll give it a pass--if we even end up going now.

go ahead

You have the tickets, you have the vacation planned.

Go, enjoy. What are you afraid of?

In Israel, there is a famous restaurant that hung a sign, a short while after it was devestated for the SECOND TIME by the ongoing wave of suicide terror attacks:

  • "The rate of terror bombing is very intense these days; It seems like every Tuesday and Friday another one is happening.

This is Wednesday. Come in and enjoy!"

(In Hebrew, if you want to refer to anything and everything that is constantly happening over and over regularly, there is an actual expression, "Col yom Sheni v'shishi..." Every Tuesday and Friday...")

For you to cancel a wonderful trip to the beautiful Red Sea and be chased away by a group of criminals --- that is total capitulation to the terrorists. You need to think long and hard about what you believe in, my friend, and decide if your liberty & freedom to live as you see fit has now just been defeated by these maniacs!

You mean "Kol sheni ve'hamishi"--every monday and thursday. The origin of that expression, by the way, is that those are the days (except Saturday) one reads the Torah in the synagogue.

You should cancel your trip and protest the fact that Egypt's government is a dictatorship creating terrorists from Egyptians and others! Egypt should wholesale reform it's stupid "government" and the West does little to nothing to protest human rights abuses.

Skeptic is correct

Yeah, that's right, Tuesday and THURSDAY --- I must admit that having someone actually point out my minor error in the Hebrew phrase took me by surprise! Only on a board like this one would I get called on this kind of goof. Impressive.

So whadda ya say, Hutch?
The TORAH was given in Sinai.
You going to make the trip or wimp out?
40 days, 40 nights.
Plenty of time to consider...

I went to Egypt almost a year ago. It is incredible. Tourism was finally back to normal after the Luxor massacre of 1997. After that attack, it was rumored (by our tour guide) that Mubarak had made a deal with the local terrorists to stop aiming at tourists, because without them Egtpt's econmy crumbles. And it had been quiet until October of last year. Now this. It's a damn shame. Egypt is one of those places everyone should visit at leanst once.

Hutch: if you decide to go, a couple of tips. When you are in the ruins you'll notice a lot of locals signaling you to "Come here." That will include the heavily armed guards. It is, by personal experience, safe to go. They'll take you to either good camera positions or to restricted areas. The armed guards tend to be particularly good tour guides. Just keep some low denomination local currency handy. And the other tip, if you are in a place where there are bound to be good camera positions, look at the floor. Most of them are marked with scrapes on the floor. This is particularly true of Karnak's Hypostyle hall.

Nononononono.

Every MONDAY and thursday--kol sheni ve'hamishi.

Your thinking of something else: the expression "Shlishi ve'shishi"--"third and sixth", which in Hebrew can also mean "tuesday and friday", really means something else: something like like "the best parts (of something)", "the cream", "the greater part", etc.

THAT expression refers, originally, not to the days the Torah is read, but to the third and sixth "portions" of the seven portions that every section (Para'sha) of the Torah read on a certain day in the synagogue (On Monday, Thursday, and Saturday...) is divided into.

In the synagogue, when the Torah is read, this means seven people from the congregation are called to stand next to the reader and have the different parts of the Pa'rasha read to them. Being called to this position (an "aliyah", literally, a "going up") is considered an honor. For complicated historical and religious reasons, the third and sixth "portions" are usually longer and are the most honorable, usually given to the Rabbi (if present), a donor to the synagogue, etc.

Get it, you ignoramous?! :p ;)

I've had it. Tastes a bit like liver. Some like that flavor. Tends to break up in the pan unless the heat is set very high. There's a technique to keeping the pieces from liquefying as you cook them.

Best served with a Bernaise sauce, IMO. Braised fava beans go well as a side dish.

I love you guys

You know, this thread could have just been another terrorism discussion, while offering the same worn-out cliches. So far, it is making me smile, teaching me new things, and making me quite glad that we can sit here and share a (warped) sense of humor in the face of tragedy.

It is perfectly in-line with the sentiments I expressed in my reply to hutch ----- keep going, don't get distressed.

A typical reaction to these kinds of attacks:

(From YNET NEWS)
One Week after Bombing, Tel Aviv Club Reopens

Mar 04, 2005 11:08:37 AM ET

Less than a week after a suicide bomber exploded himself on its premises murdering five people, the Stage nightclub in Tel Aviv reopened Thursday, YNET reported. The club's owners decided to reopen the site even before the end of the seven-day mourning period as a message to terrorists that life goes on. The venue's entrance has been renovated, the lobby repainted, and virtually all signs of the attack have been removed. The Stage nightclub’s reopening night featured a show whose proceeds were donated to the Beilinson hospital in Petah Tikva.

Returning to the club for the first time since the bombing was not easy for security manager Tsachi Uami, who sustained light injuries in the attack. "All the difficult scenes came back to me," he said. "I was holding the injured and dead in my hands."

Another security manager, Micha Mizrachi, said two of the guards injured in the attack told him they would be unable to return to work. "I told them I'm coming back here because I don't want to let some bastard who blew (himself) up here to change our lives," he said.

  • ...and so it goes...

Ah, I have photographic memory and perfect recall... when it comes to useless trivia. I'm still pissed that the internet was invented--google took all the fun out of being a trivia maven.

There's still Jeopardy.

Just a couple of quick remarks, as webfusion has aparently mistaken my post.

I work for the US Government (US Army civilian) and the trip to Egypt is part of an official meeting with the Egytptian Army forces in Cairo. So if I go or not is a decision by my superiors and any restriction placed upon Government travel to Egypt by DoD members because of this attack.

Sharm was a thought, I really want to visit Upper Egypt, but again it is a matter of cost and also if there are any restrictions imposed on US Government personnel.

And web, you may (or may not) have meant your post to sound condescending, but it rubbed me that way. FYI, I lived for 4 years in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and have been to Egypt twice before this for a total of nearly 5 weeks. Add in trips to Kenya, Tanzania, Bangkok, Panama....well, I may not be the most experienced traveller on this board, but I have been around.
