In the aftermath of the "wardrobe malfunction", strengthened by the apparent political clout of the religious right, we see more attempts to bring decency to our depraved society.

According to NPR, some members of Congress are trying to expand FCC regulation to cover cable, a vast cesspool of smut. No doubt the fact that cable-produced series are winning all sorts of awards annoys them to no end.

This morning, CNN had a story from Atlanta, where a dealer in concrete "yard art" is told she must not exhibit naughty nude replicas of the David and other classic nudes....She's too close to a school.

It's nice to know that the GOP and religeous right are looking out for children and myself. We'd all be running wild in the streets if we saw nakedness anywhere.

I'd prefer my South Park without the bleeping of "naughty" words and most definitely without the iron fist of the FCC.

Won't happen unless there is a huge public outcry for it.

It's one matter to regulate airwaves that are public domain and basically free to watch that are simply under the stewardship of private companies.

The matter changes completely when cable companies pay for their own infrastructure, charge their customers for use (and thus a consumer agrees to a contract to see this stuff), and for the most part, offer ways to block channels on the back end via digital technology. Also, not only do shows like Sex and the City win tons of awards, but they makes tons of money, a proportion of which finds its way into various lobbying interests.

This is just the usual morality freakos blustering, and has only a slightly better chance of getting passed in the wake of the unpopularity of federal government intrusion into the Schiavo case than the mandatory military draft bill did during the Iraq invasion.
 
Just my own opinion, having been in the business, as my parents were...

If you're going to have rules, they need to be applied to everyone the same, everywhere. In other words, if you can't drop the "F-bomb" on AM or FM, you shouldn't be able to do it on Satellite.

That said, I think this is absolutely insane. Come on, gang, you know what you're going to get if you listen to Howard Stern! That has NOT changed since he's been on the air. For that matter, he's up front and honest about what he's doing, and he tells you right from the get-go, this is not a program to listen to while you're snuggled up to your four-year-old. I don't enjoy Stern, but I respect him for being honest with his audience.

We don't need any more nannies, either on the right or the left. Enough is enough. Frankly, I'm groovin' on the notion that the Far Right may be about to self-immolate.

"The Venus di Milo had to wear a top and Michelangelo’s David should put on some pants if they’re going to be seen at a yard art business.
Bartholomew County officials told the business near Interstate 65 that it must move cement copies of the classical statues – and about 10 others – out of public view because they are obscene under Indiana law."

Some months ago, the NBC morning show had a segment on the unveiling of the newly-restored and cleaned "David".

This is one of the most famous works of art in the world, seen annually by many thousands of tourists. NBC managed to get through the entire segement without ever displaying David's little marble pee-pee.
Absolutely amazing.
