Penultimate Amazing
REading the May 20 commentary on "Formal Preparation of Mythology" brought back a funny incident from my youth. I worked for a while (alternative service in the 60's) at an institution run by Anthroposophists, where of course biodynamic gardening was practiced assiduously along with a lot of other nonsense. I once got roped into helping with the annual mixing of the famous preparation, which as I recall differed slightly from the one described here, involving a cow horn buried in a special place at a special phase of the moon, etc, then dug up. Anyway, I was set to stirring a big wooden barrel with this stuff in it, and a very concerned person came up to me and told me that I was stirring it in the wrong direction. I think i was going clockwise, and the formula called for counterclockwise, and the explanation had to do with the natural tendency of things to grow in spirals. The explanation was very earnest and full of detail. Another time, a directive went out from one of the higher-ups who had noticed that certain vegetables harvested in the garden were being pulled out by the roots and laid on the ground. He asked if they would please in future cut them off, because it was more dignified, and less hurtful to their spirits.
I should mention that these Anthroposophists were a genial bunch, and as nutters go they did some very good service to the community, and despite being somewhat cultish in many ways, they don't proselytize. Since beneath all the hooey and nonsense most of biodynamic gardening is just good old fashioned careful organic gardening, we got very good vegetables, as well as nice fresh raw milk and organic free-range eggs which were like a different species from what you get at the store. I used to eat them raw.
I didn't stay with the outfit after my term was up. I just couldn't see having to remember which way to rotate.
