If I had to pick the to two democrat senators who are trying to get their image in order for 2008, I would have to say they are Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. What is interesting is the 180 degree difference in their tactics.

Hillary Clinton seems to be following the path of least resistance. Her plan seems to be on inaction and filling a seat in important committees while not getting bogged down in the political wrangling that mired Kerry. I would elaborate but there isn't much to talk about an inaction plan.

Biden is that pitbill, partisan, shrill, obstructionist shill. He seems to be aiming at winning primaries while Hilliary is focused on winning the general election. I think Biden is being smart. If Hillary takes the primary process for granted, it leaves it open for someone in the Howard Dean piss and vinegar mold to challenge that front runner status. Biden looks like a presidential candidate. The pitch of his voice and his theatrics seem right for it. His hair needs serious help.

So I guess the big question is, whose plan is the better one? Will it pay off? Will Biden get so partisan he gets pigeonholed? Will Hillary move more to the shrill side to steal Biden's heat as the exploratory phase gets closer? If you remember, Gephardt tried to do this to inch into Dean's voters and it sunk him faster than concrete shoes.

I guess the overall question is, will the democrats want mean or a queen?

I suspect that any candidate who wanted to distance themselves from accusations of being shrill, would follow the time honored tradition of using someone else as their attack dog, while maintaining a more moderate stance in person.

Carville anyone?
