As I said at Digg, natural selection's a bitch. ;)

"You’ll forgive me if I take some small measure of credit for this one: after something in the region of 35,000 words of the Ben Stein Watch, the world’s worst financial columnist has finally been fired from the New York Times," Salmon writes. "And I couldn’t be happier. The reason was his appearance in commercials for (and on the homepage of) freescore.com, a sleazy company which exists only to extract large sums of money from those who can least afford it.

"NYT spokeswoman Catherine Mathis confirmed this, telling Gawker that 'Ben Stein’s fine work for us as a columnist for Sunday Business had to end, we told him, after we learned that he had become a commercial spokesman for FreeScore, a financial services company,'" Salmon continues.

Stein has to pay for all those houses he owns. Still, he's one of my favorite financial pundits.

I gave up even mildly being able to like him given his views on certain scientific ideas.

I did not knew who ben stein was until I heard (and partially saw) "expelled - no intelligence inside". You can imagine my very very low opinion of him after that.

Ben Stein might be really depressed- he hasn't called me since he was fired.

Well, Ben never called me before he was fired either, but that's beside the point.

I want to let him know he could learn important things and meet influential people at TAM8.

Of all the sleezy, lying "free" credit reporting services out there, Stein joined the sleeziest. Freescore.com charges $30 a month for something the credit bureaus will provide for free....and their "service" doesn't even tell you your FICO score!

So what do you get for that $30 a month?

Not a whole helluva a lot. First, you get anytime access to the reports and scores you already saw for a mingy buck. Second, the company sends you alerts when “there’s a critical change in your credit profile that could impact your credit score.” As Ben and Filbert know, unless you are hunting for a loan, there’s no reason to know about every little twiddle in your credit score. Seriously, it’s like going on a diet and then weighing yourself every hour to see if there’s been a change. What else? You get toll-free access to the site’s customer service team — whoopie! There’s some other stuff you probably don’t need either, including –and, this is my favorite — access to your free annual Social Security Report. I mean, Ben, Filbert, you know that the government mails that to you without your even asking.
