BBC news debate on primate research

it's a classic animal rights debate....

Why don't we just perform animal testing on creatures that nobody likes, such as spiders, cockroaches, dung beetles and venomous snakes? Problem solved.

[Martin1983], London, United Kingdom

The underlying assumption here is that humans have more "rights" than other animals; that they are somehow more deserving of life than other animals.

Utter arrogant nonsense.

monkeys have DNA that matches mans to over 97%, a mouse doesn't. Monkeys demonstrate intellegence, problem solving, and self awareness. The men that fell into comas through medical testing knew what there were risks involved and got paid for it. I doubt a monkey will be as prepared or as willing.

Absolutely not.

We simply do not have the right. We don't own other animals, they aren't ours to play with and experiment on. It's pathetic. The ONLY justification would be if the the animals in question also suffered from the disease/condition for which a cure is sought.

Alternative? Wanna find a cure for a Human condition? Test on Humans. Breed Humans specifically to test on. Or use habitual serious criminals.

Honestly, you pro-testers are blind and very very low of intellect.

What silly people, they sound like the rejects that make up PETA and other idiot ar groups. I would love legislation that requires ars to be denied any medical treatment or food that animal testing has been involved with. I like to keep them honest.:)

Other bacteria died in the process of discovering aspirin. Sorry no meds for you.

Edit:
Holy Carp. I think this poster was serious!

I think monkeys should be spared as they have done nothing wrong.

We should use the primates in our over-populated prisons for scientific experiments.

Well, at least the dregs of our society would be able to make a positive contribution to society. It will be a lot cheaper than using other primates. And give more accurate results than using animals.

Actually the only animals that should be used are animals bred in captivity. Otherwise we may make certain animals extinct, then we would not be able to use them for any purpose.
