Bad Archaeology: articles wanted!

My earlier work on the Bad Archaeology concept was halted in part due to the notion that with a free Geocities site, proper and quality content would be sorely anemic or simply impractical.

I've found a little way to work with Geocities' free account limitations, and am now confident that a Bad Archaeology site, pending upgrade, can still offer content of an acceptable quality.

I am now soliciting articles from the forum public, regarding topics pertinent to "Bad Archaeology". For the unsure, a list of these topics will be provided below. Right now, the "legal" stuff:

To submit an article, send an email, entitled "BA Article", with the article attached, to jkorosi@yahoo.com . Here are the requirements for each article:

  • Each article must be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc) format. If you are unable to do this, contact me first by email.
  • Each article should be single-spaced, with inserted images set to Tight text wrap.
  • Images must be in JPEG or GIF format. No bitmaps!
  • Each article must contain all photos and text formatting already placed and "ready for publishing".
  • Each article should begin with a center-justified title, and a center-justified byline immediately below. I reserve the right to alter text font and size, as well as the color pallete, as necessary to blend with site standard.
  • Each article, when published on the web, will be headed with a "Bad Archaeology" banner added by me.
  • Within each article all photographs, diagrams, other graphics, quotes, and figures shall be appropriately credited.
  • Numbered footnotes and postscript biblios are acceptable.

As of this point in time, I would like you to make an honest effort to keep file sizes under 300 KB. Excessively abrasive, taunting, or foul language is not permissible. I reserve the right to request changes; however it is my policy to discuss changes with article authors first before publishing. Submission of an article or articles does not mean an article will be published; articles may be rejected for any reason or no reason. A couple of tips:

- Organize your article. I highly suggest adding sub titles if your article's length warrants it.
- It is very professional and just plain cool to add a "suggested reading list" at the end of your article (it should come before the biblio).
- No illegal material...duh.
- Spruce up your article with images and diagrams. You can even make some yourself! But watch that file size...
- If your article takes an attacking stance, attack a specific work, or works, for specific reasons. Do not attack entire concepts, as the future can bring anything - that's the way science is. We are skeptics, not cynics.

And finally, the list of acceptable topics...

"Cult Archaeology"; Atlantis and "lost continents"; faulty or irresponsible field or lab techniques; past incidences of "bad archaeology"; ancient "astronauts"; pyramidology and "pyramidiocy"; government ineptitude or interference with archaeology; public interference with archaeology; bad archaeology in the media (TV, film, books, magazines etc) - both fiction and nonfiction; archaeological hoaxes past and present; misconceptions regarding archaeology, and science in general; skepticism and its place in science; human-dinosaur coexistence; "out-of-place" artifacts; and true archaeological mysteries. Subject, naturally, to change or expansion.

Have fun, and thanks in advance.

Does this mean that you intend to put the articles on the web in the Word format?

In my opinion, that's not a particularly good idea. I'd suggest using format that can be read without troubles on most computer architectures, like pdf or ps. Or better still, if it is to be a pure internet site, use plain html.

No; I plan to put them up in html. I have the BA header "banner" saved as a Word template, so when you submit an article I simply do a copy-paste, and then let Word convert it to an html file. I have Frontpage but I can't use it with Geocities Free; this method is KISS-simple and seems to work excellent for me - it's what I use for Forum Battles.

A good idea - NOT. Word conversion to HTML creates emormous amounts of useless code that just adds to bandwidth. It also tends to create text that doesn't stretch or shrink to fit different screen resolutions and sizes.
Learn some simple web-design skills and get a HTML editor that converts .txt into HTML.

ETA: You can use basic FrontPage for a Geocities site - you just can't use FP extensions.

You HAVE to have an entire section devoted to Intelligent Design wacko-theories!
