Every Australian school will be eligible for a $20,000 grant to employ a chaplain - on condition the government is happy with its choice of spiritual guidance provider.
Prime Minister John Howard said today his scheme to promote pastoral care and spiritual guidance for students would be open to all public and private schools.
The scheme would be entirely voluntary and was not designed to favour chaplains of one religion, he said.
"It's available for both government and non-government schools, it's not restricted to Christian chaplains," Mr Howard told reporters in Canberra.
Under the three-year, $90 million program, schools will employ chaplains to provide pastoral care, religious and personal advice and support to students and staff.

Australia will be re-created in the image of John Winston Howard.

I'm writing up the application form for monetary support on behalf of a certain Sydney Sheikh for a Muslim chaplain in a girl's school, even as we speak!

:D

I do hope they plan to employ Feng Shui experts as well. While they're throwing money away on professional nonsense-dealers, they may as well get the furniture rearranged. You don't want the Education Corner to have too many toilets in it, otherwise the kiddie's learning will be flushed away by the negative energy vortices.

So how will the Howard government react when the "spiritual guidance provider" suggested turns out to be non-Christian?

I'm guessing this is $20,000 Australian, which is enough to get one very part-time guy who is supposed to cater to all the students and staff, regardless of religion. I don't think there's a fair way to do this.

I think that will be covered by the part that says "on condition the government is happy with its choice of spiritual guidance provider."

Damn I can't stand L'il Johnny. Beats me how he gets elected over and over considering the lies he throws out before elections then goe back on afterwards.
Before: There will be no GST.
After: Heres my new GST.
Before: I will have an in depth referendum on Aus becoming a republic.
After: Heres my ridiculous unworkable amazingly expensive take on what it takes for us to become a republic, vote on it.
etc, etc...

Or more likely they will save hiring the witch or the scientologist for the next administration. :)
