Aussies... how mainstream is Gun Control Australia?

And more importantly, I suppose, how mainstream is the view that university professors shouldn't be allowed to express pro-gun views, and universities that have such a broad definition of academic freedom ought not be supported by the Australian government?

I'd never heard of Gun Control Australia until this thread.

I'm a fairly strong advocate of our gun control laws (and our weapon control laws in general), but that particular website doesn't represent my views or the views of most people I know who support our gun control laws.

Whitley doesn't have a hope in hell of single-handedly changing our gun control laws, and the arguments on that website implying that students will be bringing weapons to campus at his urging are both irresponsible and inaccurate - the penalities for breaching our gun control laws are severe enough that not too many students are going to risk breaking those laws purely to make a point.

In short, GCA is certainly not expressing "mainstream" views.

Very good to hear... thanks. It looks like I was dim enough to post this at about 2 am your time.

GCA's problem with him is his use of the Universitie's letterhead to push his views. The Deparment of Economics?

He is free to say what he wants, but if he is going to speak in a Professional sense, he better stick to Economics.

GCA is a sight I have seen before, and although not well known, seem to represent the majority view towards gun control. That is, after that guy joined a pistol club and used his guns for a massacre, the laws on pistols were tightened. People weren't clamouring for the right to own pistols themselves.

I don't see the term 'letterhead' in the press release. It says that he gives his university titles in his 'promotions', which seems to me to be quite another thing. Something like this for example.

Edit to note that there is no degree in 'gun policy' or 'vehicle safety policy' and Economics scholars have studied and developed exactly the tools required to study risk/reward situations that present themselves when society makes decisions like this.
