Aurora in Ohio

Nice pic nonetheless. I was bummed we missed it here in the east due to rainy weather. Though with all the sunspot activity we should get a few more chances.

I was taking the kids trick-or-treating and saw it. Holy Crap! Everybody was out in the street looking up in the sky. Even the kids were enthralled.

Upstate New York had 3/4 of the sky covered with a blood red glow and some streaks of green and white. What a show! It lasted for almost an hour. Magnificent!

Holy Cow I saw my first aurora.

It was like four shafts of light coming up from the horizon circling around converging in the center, then breaking out and circiling again. Then they met at the center and spiraled outward. This went on for hours...

What I'd like to know is how did the new Kroger store get the sun and the Earth's magnetosphere to co-operate?

Do you guys actually buy that crap about it being the "aurora?" That was UFOs that you saw last night. Anyone who tells you different is part of the conspiracy to keep it secret.

The solar storms were kind of a mixed blessing in Southern California. The smoke from the fires made it all but impossible for us to witness the Northern lights during one of the rare times they might be visible this far south.

However, Tuesday morning, I saw something I'll probably never witness again: Sunspots visible to the naked eye. The smoke made a perfect filter for direct observation of the sun and the storms were quite distinct on its blood-red surface.

Sunspots visible to the eye are not that unusual. All you need is a solar filter. It is not a good idea to look at the sun without a good quality solar filter, I would not observe the sun through a smoke "filter", and would never recommend that anyone else do so.
