Audrey Santos - Stigmata or Munchausen by proxy?

In another thread, which has turned into a discussion of nicknames for genitalia (but what else is new around here? :p ), I tried to start my own derail into a discussion of Audrey Santos.

LostAngeles raised the possibility that the "marks" (similar to stigmata) this young girl exhibits are a consequence of Munchausen by proxy. I wonder if it is this or more deliberate victimization to raise cash or even an odd coincidence of bedsores/bruising.

For those unfamiliar with her case, selected quotes (bolding mine) from her official web site :

The change in Little Audrey’s life began on a hot summer day, August 9, 1987, when Audrey was three years old. It was on this day that Audrey fell into the family swimming pool, even though she had been afraid of water.

Audrey recovered but was rushed to the hospital where she was overmedicated. The doctor prescribed too much Phenobarbital, and Audrey lapsed into a coma.

She was out of the coma in three weeks. She remains in a state called Akinetic Mutism — non-moving, non-speaking.

The "professionals" insisted that Audrey be placed in an institution. Audrey’s mother Linda, felt that she would receive better care being home with her family. So in November four months following the accident, Audrey was brought home.

We believe that signs and wonders are manifesting with Audrey, around her and about her. Audrey seems to manifest unexplainable (medically) marks on her body that resemble the wounds of Christ.

The religious images that exude oil and blood are unexplainable to us. The Bishop’s commission has stated clearly they have found no trickery.

The healings that take place here are not completely investigated by the Bishop’s Commission but they are open to a full study in order to validate any claims.

Audrey brings us to the Eucharist. There are four consecrated hosts that have exhibited human blood

Having resigned herself to God’s will prior to the age of seven (the age of reason), it is unlikely that Audrey has ever sinned. Father Emmanuel Charles McCarthy, a Massachusetts based Melkite Catholic priest whose ministry centers around justice and peace, believes that the little girl is redemptively connected with the sins of nuclear destruction.

Father Renê Laurentin, a member of the Council of Doctrine and Faith and world-renowned theologian, concluded a four year personal investigation into the life of Audrey Santo. The esteemed Catholic scholar expects to report his favorable findings to the council. He visited Little Audrey in July 1993 and was deeply moved by being in her presence and stated "This is Holy Ground." Little Audrey is a soul truly blessed and chosen by God.

Bishop Daniel Reilly of Worcester, Massachusetts has set up a commission of psychologists, doctors and a theologian to study the events at Little Audrey’s. The first phase of the investigation is over — we are soon to begin the second phase.

A summary report from the Church can be found
here . It raises the possibility of chicanery and desire for fame but pretty much dismisses these explanations. Nonetheless, the tone is reserved as far as accepting the miraculous nature of the case.

Finally, an article by Joe Nickell which provides a skeptical analysis of the weeping statues etc but only mentions the troubling stigmata in passing.

I guess there are no answers as we do not have the data but somehow during the Schiavo case, my mind kept returning to this little girl so I thought I'd ask my fellow forumites for their thoughts....

Having a look through the site, I don't think it's either stigmata or Munchausen by proxy. As for the statues "weeping" or whatever, well that's up for debate.

I think, just based on the wording of the writings there, that her family may just be grasping at the one thing that makes Audrey's tragedy "OK" in their minds-- that "goddidit."

I think it's phenomenally sad. I feel very sorry for her family, and for her.

The story of Little Audrey Santo

Claim: A young girl, born in 1983, is claimed to be instrumental in many miracles, e.g. oil-weeping icons and statues, as well as people being healed. The girl is multi-handicapped, unable to move, speak or eat without help. The family garage has been converted into a chapel. The miracles started after the girl, her mother and one of the girl's nurses, travelled to Medjugorie in Bosnia, a modern-day Lourdes. When they returned home, the miracles started. Audrey began to show signs of stigmata, and her body showed signs of red stripes, as if she had been scourged. People visiting the girl claimed to be healed. A eucharistic miracle has even been filmed, where a priest notice a red spot on one of the hosties. The whole place is literally filled with icons, statues, plaques, photos and crucifixes that all drip oil, mostly olive oil. Whether it is virgin olive oil could not be confirmed.

Problems:

* Even investigators, commissioned by the church, do not accept the events as miracles.
* It is virtually impossible to prevent the possibility of chicanery: The members of the family - those with the clearest interest in keeping this miracle popular - have to have access 24/7 to the handicapped girl. How can you deny them that?
* In the case of the red spot on a hostie, it is very easy for the priest to have palmed a tiny sack of blood, or merely preparated it beforehand.
An evening with a Miracle Man

There is also the possibility that someone is making the markings on her body appear. Yes, by inflicting the wounds...

I visited the web site indicated, and I was sickened by what I saw. These people are putting their comatose daughter on display for money like a freakin' circus sideshow.

Very true.

Do not ever underestimate the power of belief.

It will make you do what the parents of Audrey Santo have done.

Oh, it is maddening! I live about 50 min. from her. She was rolled out onto the Holy Cross football field in a glass case where the believers could sit in the stadium seats and cry, and pray, and hope that their ailments would be cured by this poor creature.

If you do check out her site, notice the price list of stuff you can buy and notice the donation page.

It's wrong. They are twisted and sick. The biggest irony is, if there is a God, they are never going to meet him.

I would very much like to see some pictures of that.

"Little Audrey is a soul truly blessed and chosen by God."

I'm sure god loves her, letting her nearly down, letting a doctor nearly kill her with an overdose of Phenobarbital and then letting her stay in a state of Akinetic Mutism.

Not to mention god letting the poor girl suffer with wounds "similar" to those supposedly suffered by christ.

Then the poor girl is carted around like a freakshow; yup, I can see gods love spread all around her like a cancer.
