I'm looking for a utility to let me capture the audio track from a DVD, preferably freeware or shareware. I just want to rip off sections of the audio for other uses. I've been doing it the "hard" way by digitizing the audio from the Line Out jacks on my computer's amplifier through a Microtrak 96/24 digital recording unit. I've tried looking for the reported "record what the computer speakers are playing" option in Audacity, but there are no options like that in the drop-down Source menu.

Any suggestions? I've tried googling for such a critter, but nothing I found seems able to do just what I want.

I suspect you are simply looking on the wrong place. Open your windows volume control panel, select properties and then select recording, click ok and finally set your default recording line which you probably want to be 'stereo mix.'

Try Mplayer. Set the video output to Null and the audio to pcm.

ETA:
Video turns nasty pink while doing this. The audio ends up in a file named "audiodump.wav" I don't know where it will land because I don't have a DVD to try out right now. It may well land in the Mplayer program folder.

Mplayer lets you select which audio tracks you want played.

You can also use DVD Decrypter, it's free. It might take a bit of work though and the audio will most likely be in AC3 format.

I've successfully used Audacity to do this. IIRC I just started the DVD playing and hit record on Audacity. Seems so obvious you must have tried it.

I know that VirtualDubMod works. It's free and easy to find, if you're interested. It does more than rip audio as well. Don't wanna sound like a spammer, so I'll quit here.
