Atheist and Theist Arguing

not until theist and theist stop arguing or even more unlikely atheist and atheist

Of course it will end! All things come to an End.

But this does not mean it will not be replaced by something extremely similar. Or indeed identical.

No because a lot of the time they are arguing at cross purposes. Atheists need to consider other conceptions of "God" apart from the "God of the gaps" conceptualisation. Until they do it is all to no avail, because they say that to believe in "X" is ridiculous where as a lot of theists actually believe in "Y".

God is any sort of overarching intentional force. If theists don't believe in that sort of God, they simply aren't theists.

Having been a theist, and having had many in-depth discussions with theists, I find that many people do not know what they believe. I try to discuss Y, and they suddenly start talking about Y1, Y2, Y3 and so on.
Example:
P: Do you believe in the bible?
T: Yes
P: Is it all true?
T: Yes
P: What about Noahs ark?
T: Errrrrrrrr, yes
P: But, it's logically impossible
T: Errrrr, was that my wife calling me? Sorry, got to run

To reject the "God of the gaps" conceptualisation of God is of course not to reject such a notion of God. God's intentions might be said to be revealed through the physical laws of nature in the same way as some of our bodily behaviour is an expression of our intentions.

No. At least not anytime during our lives.

Until we understand the universe and all its mysteries are solved one person will claim X another will claim NOT X, or perhaps Y.

Humankind is a curious sort. We are often quick to wholeheartedly defend our guesses and opinions knowing full well that they are little more than that in many cases.

Just my thoughts,

Sort:)

How about Republicans and Democrats - and everyone else? Christians and Islamics? Protestants and Catholics? Mac vs Windows vs *nix vs BeOS? People Who Actually Know What They Are Talking About vs People Who Only Think They Know What They Are Talking About?

Uh, no. As there are still flat and young earthers, and I'm sure if you look hard enough and long enough you'll find a believer in phlogistine, people will always be arguing about something, and most issues will never truly die - they won't even fade away. Why would they?

Maybe it'll cut down a little when each side stops trying to attach straw men to the other side in order to "win" (what's the prize?). That tends to drag things out.

When will Cubs and White Sox fans live in harmony? When will the Cheeseheads lay down with the FIBs? When will the Baptists and the Catholics decide to let bygones be bygones? When will the Spice Girls re-unite and bring more Girl Power to the masses?

So long as you listen to the loudest voices no one will ever stop arguing within your earshot... those that do you no longer hear.

People believe in religion because of the way it makes them feel. As long as human beings can change how they feel by changing what they believe, they will.

You might think that someday it will become unacceptable to control your feelings by believing in false things, much as cannabilism or incest became taboo... but we still have both of those, so why would we think that religion would ever wholly disappear?

People are not rational animals. They are animals that are capable of rationality.

Some theists assume that if you ask them what God is, you're really asking them to argue for God's existence after saying a bunch of things about God. Others admit they don't know, drop the subject, and go on believing anyway. I don't know which is worse.
