Astrofaces: a hoax or something else?

A while ago, I came across this site called Astrofaces. According to people who believe in astrology, it's not just your sun sign that's important, but also your ascendant and moon sign. These are supposed to have an impact on your personality, appearance, etc.

This site doesn't seem to be arguing in favour of the predictive aspect of astrology, but saying that there is evidence to support that the planets have an impact on physical appearance.

I looked through many sets of faces and many of them do have very similar features. Even though the people don't look exactly the same, many of their prominent features (eyes, nose, face shape, etc.) look incredibly similar - even when they're different races.

For this site, people send in their own pictures to be posted up. However, I can't know if the webmaster posts all of them up or leaves out the ones that don't support his hypothesis.

Go to the site and click on the link to the left that says "clearest groups". If you look really carefully at their face shapes and individual features, you'll see what I'm talking about. Some of the groups have more obvious similarities than others, so I recommend looking at a few different ones.

If you go to the link "Sun Moon Asc", there are tons of these photos, organized by groups. There are so many with really obvious similarities.

So, what do you think? A hoax, cherry-picking or something else?

Does no one have an opinion on this?

It's not exactly new.

Plate from Lavater's Essays On Physiognomy circa 1795.

Physiognomy is the art of reading the face to judge personality or character. It was once believed your facial features reflected or contributed to who you were. It is not surprising that it would make a comeback among the astrology crowd.

Exactly how "close" do these faces have to be to be included in their sign's entry? What about all of those who do not have "standard" face shapes?

On the list of reasons people look similar, the day, month or year has about the least to do with it. Least being just slightly higher than 0 because there are such things as twins. They tend to share the same "signs". Got forbid one born at 11:55PM on the 20th and the other born at 12:01AM the next day. What would they look like? Maybe when that happens Jupiter falls from the sky and smashes one in the face.

I look almost exactly like my father; our stars signs, moon signs and ascendants are entirely different. What features I do not share with my father (which are very few) I share instead with my mother's male relatives, none of whom share my zodiac.

Color me astonished.

I'm an identical twin. My brother and I, necessarily, share the same sun sign and ascendants and so on. Nevertheless, we are very different, as people - I'm an artist, he's a scientist...we can be both be frustrated by the other's take on things...

But, we do look alike, remarkably so! There must be something in it...

I think that some of you misunderstand - it's not that the people look the same as the ones who share their sun, moon, and ascendant. It's just that they (if you believe the site) share really obvious facial similarities (really similar nose, mouth, face shape, etc.). Which probably means that if this stuff were true, you could still look like your father in most ways but share other similarities with people who share your signs.

I'm not sure where they stand on the predictive aspect of astrology, though. I suppose it's possible to believe the positions of planets will affect a person's appearance without believing they'll predict the future. But I guess that's irrelevant.

I remember from the days when I was actually into astrology that it was supposed to be your ascendant that most affects your physical appearance.

But anyway, here's the part I'm interested in: What do the rest of you think this site is doing? Cherry-picking, purposely putting the pictures in the wrong place? Only accepting the ones that fit in? Either way, if they do this stuff they must have a ton of angry e-mails. And what would be the point? Are there any other possibilities for how they could be selecting data that would explain this?

I don't know, actually. I might try and contact the webmaster to see if I get any answers. If the site's claims turned out to be true, the non-standard face shapes would probably have the same Sun/Moon/Ascendant combo and be grouped together.

I can't find a separate e-mail address to send my questions to, so I might have to use the one for sending pictures in. I find it a bit odd that the names of the people compiling these pictures are not available - not even pseudonyms.
