Are there atheists in hell?

Karen and I were driving on US11 west of Knoxville today. I noticed a lady pull up to a church sign at the Church of Niota, and thought the sign read “THERE ARE NO ATHEISTS IN HELL”. Seemed an odd thing to put on a church sign. We turned around to verify that’s what I had seen, but by the time we got back to the sign it was blank.

At first blush, as an atheist that seems to be good news. I looked up the phrase on Google, and it’s apparently a “thing”. And a thing with a variety of interpretations. One was if one was an atheist upon their demise, they then met Jesus and believed, but too late. John 3:16 or some such. So, they’d go to hell alright, just not as an atheist.

I was amused when a supposedly informed person on Quora or whatever began his post with “Logic tells us…”. This link is not that, but gives you an idea of the “logic” behind the assertion: https://www.christianpost.com/news/atheists-eternity-hell-heaven-god-bible-sin-death.html

Might be old hat, but this whole concept is new to me.

If hell were real, there would undoubtedly be atheists there. That being said, my dad was raised catholic. He claims I can't go to hell on account of not being a catholic. I wasn't babtized so the worst I get is Purgatory.

Dude lives in Papillion, Nebraska. I'd take his word on the demographics of hell.

...

If I found myself alive after my death and in hell and otherwise still my old self (which implies remembering my basic convictions, beliefs, knowledge), that would indeed seriously challenge my atheism.

There are no atheists in Hell. There are no people in Hell. There is no Hell.* Case closed.

*Except for places named Hell in Michigan, USA; Netherlands; Norway; and Cayman Islands. It is doubtful that anyone will end up in any of these after they die.

If hell were real only an idiot would still be an atheist after arriving there.

So I'm pretty sure there would be plenty of atheists in any real hell.

Dante sort of defined hell with details, otherwise before him it was " a place of great suffering" and in most description eternal.

From vague threat to well defined levels in one book. Pretty tough place especially for any person in power he didn't approve of.

I prefer the Simpson's hell. The punishment was far more creative. Also you could get kicked out of it.

Well, just to be pedantic, hell doesn't necessarily prove god. It's the step where you meet god at judgement that does that.

I wish I could go to hell when I die, because all the interesting people would be there, and we could party. Realistically, though, it's all stupid BS.

Will calling plenty of atheists "idiots" score you any brownie points with your imaginary, invisible, magical, sky-daddy?

Or is it intended merely as normal hate speech?
