Are Paul Offit's children still alive

I've overheard some conversations between some friends of mine about an even that goes like this:

"Once, there was this guy who was so adavant (I think that's how it's spelled...) that vaccines were not harmful that he had vaccinated two of his sons on stage in front of an audience. Shortly afterwards, they both have died."

I couldn't find the original article, story or whatever that recites this event (let alone the name of this man or his sons, or the date of this event) but I think I found something close to it. While reading this old Wired article:

http://www.wired.com/magazine/2009/10/ff_waronscience/all/1

I found this particular paragraph near the bottom of the page:

Risk is also the motivating idea in Offit’s life. This is a man, after all, who opted to give his own two children — now teenagers — the flu vaccine before it was recommended for their age group. Why? Because the risk of harm if his children got sick was too great. Offit, like everyone else, will do anything to protect his children. And he wants Americans to be fully educated about risk and not hoodwinked into thinking that dropping vaccines keeps their children safe. “The choice not to get a vaccine is not a choice to take no risk,” he says. “It’s just a choice to take a different risk, and we need to be better about saying, ‘Here’s what that different risk looks like.’ Dying of Hib meningitis is a horrible, ugly way to die.”

Now, I can't find any information on Offit's two children...at least not on the wikipedia article. So, can anyone here offer their input on this story or any information about Offit's two children? Cause, if my friend's story IS about Offit's two children AND they both have their hearts ticking, well then I might have something to show my friends. :D

I just did enough Google stalking to assure myself that Offit's kids were alive and well. Found their Facebooks, but I don't particularly want to share those links in light of the fact that Offit has said he and his family have received death threats.

In the acknowledgements of his latest book, Offit thanks both children by name for reading the manuscript, which to me strongly implies that they are alive and well to the point of literacy. The children are also named in several of his online biographies.

(snip)
Not to derail, but the word was probably "adamant," meaning "firm, strongly set".

That's a very interesting story. I am not one his children, yet I am alive.

If it helps I'm nearly 31. The vast majority of kids I went to school with and got vaccinated with in the 1980s at primary school between the ages of 4 and 11 are still alive. Those that have unfortunately passed away (and are dearly missed) were victims of conditions unconnected to any kn own vaccination.

A brief check across the entire UK shows that this is pretty much universally true. I see no reason having a vaccine administered on stage rather than in the office of a school nurse of a gym hall, will make any difference.

These whackamoles have some strange **** to say about him:

I also found the following paragraph on their Donation page:

https://npo.networkforgood.org/Donate/Donate.aspx?npoSubscriptionId=6718

The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) was founded in 1982. This charitable (fully recognized 501c3) organization is totally publicly supported by donations from citizens and receives no corporate, federal or state grants. NVIC is funded by annual donor supporters, grants from philanthropic foundations and donations made by individuals for information that NVIC researches, produces and makes available to the public. Through your generous support NVIC provides assistance to those who have suffered vaccine reactions. As an independent clearinghouse for information on diseases and vaccines, NVIC does not promote the use of vaccines and does not advise against the use of vaccines. We support the availability of all preventive health care options, including vaccination, and the right of consumers to make educated, voluntary health care choices.

Does that mean that it is a tax deductible donation? As offered by the United States Government whom, from what I understand from some conspiracy theorists, is in the pockets of "Big Pharma"?

Well, Paradox74, welcome to a place where you can make better friends.

Quite seriously, I have "run up and hug when you see them" friends on 3 continents now, courtesy of the JREF, this Forum, TAM, and a skeptic's chatroom.

There are lots of awesome people in here. Welcome aboard!

Nice to meet you! Miss_Kitt
