I suspect they fall into two camps.

First, and by far the majority, are simply ignorant and/or stupid. They honestly believe what they've been told, and why not? What they're told is dressed up to look like truth, and it's terribly easy to sell a lie when the person you are telling it to desperately wants to believe it. Garbage in, garbage out.

The minority are indeed completely devoid of Human decency. I don't doubt for a second that they know perfectly well that they are peddalling lies - you couldn't work to make the lies convincing without knowing what you were doing. They seem perfectly comfortable with that.

I imagine they think they are working for a greater good. I imagine they think that getting religion into schools is the way to a better America. Either they think the world will be a better place with kids taught christianity in schools, or if you like conspiracy theories they see it as one step closer to a total theocracy.

Actually, in a way ID reminds me of a cargo cult. They've seen just how successful science is, bringing miracles that make theirs look pitiful in comparison. They think that by building their own version of it maybe that good stuff can be theirs. Thing is, they just don't know how to do it right.

I myself used to be a creationist. I will say that it is not a lack of "human decency" that drives them. For my part, I truly thought I was pursuing "the truth" and that it was the evolutionists that were in denial. It was only when I decided to take an objective look at the evidence rather than simply trust the various teachers that told me "evolution is wrong, they have no evidence, and they are lying to us" that I discovered how totally misled I had been, and how little actual thinking I was doing.

This isn't really a matter of active denial. It is passive denial, which I can tell you from personal experience is a LOT easier. It's basically just never actually doing anything to confirm or deny what you are told.

I'm sure they are proud or at least comfortable in their beliefs.

The only one I've seen --- and I've seen lots --- whom I think is a deliberate fraud is [swiki]Kent Hovind[/swiki]. And even then he might be stark raving mad.

Jeez, they say there are no such things as dumb questions, but this proves that wrong.

Try asking the same question, only using Hispanics or Democrats or Germans or fishermen or whiskey drinkers instead of ID'ers. Still feel good asking overgeneralizing questions?

I'm sure they (like anyone else) look in the mirror and think "hmm, I need to shave" or "look at that handsome chap" just like I do every morning.
