Is it true that there are certain substances that enhance person's libido? How about the opposite, is it possible to reduce one's sex drive?

I've read that for example certain antidepressants have these kind of effects. I've also heard lots of stories about foods causing the same but not maybe in the same magnitude.

What are the mechanisms behind different substances if / when they affect the libido?

Bromide was meant to do the trick - apparently in the war it was added to the troops water supplies.

And yes, there are many centrally-acting neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine etc . These may enhance or adversely affect libido.

If I have time I dig some links out

No date is complete with out booze and ruffies!

J/K

But really, alcohol seems to me to be the best thing to get the juices flowing.

Try giving up smoking. I havent had a smoke for 36 hours and am growing increasingly lecherous, I cant stop thinking of some some soft wet warm place to stick it....

I've heard that certain illegal drugs like MDMA and THC cause heightened libido. I know that ethanol can.

Yohimbine has some results with some people. Nothing like prescription drugs of course, like Viagra, Cialis or Levitra. Also the effective prohormones should do something, although prolonged use will have the opposite effects.

But the best aphrodisiac is a new woman :D

Scientist have discovered a food which will decrease a woman's sex drive by 80-90%.

As I suspected, most replies would address the positive side of the issue. However, I'm more interested on the opposite. From the little bits I've studied it looks like specific medicines (used for example in cases of sexual criminals) are the only solid method for obtaining this specifically.

I'm still uncertain on the army issue, but on the information presented looks like at least saltpeter isn't used and there are some myths about concerning it. Maybe there's some other chemical that is applied to foods served in the military service which creates a suppressing effect?

Cut down your carbs and saturated fat as much as possible.

All right, so this would result in increased relative amount of proteins in the nutrition. Where does the action-reaction chain go from here, what is the mechanism on the way to affecting libido?
