My hubby has a mobile phone provided by his company. Over the past week, it's failed to work when he's in our apartment. It's worked fine for two years, but now when he tries to make or recieve a call, it just says 'Network Busy.

However, he can send and receive texts. :boggled:

He has a full network signal, so it's not that.

It works when he leaves the apartment.

His company called Vodafone (the network provider) and they claim it's not a problem with the network or anything like a broken mast locally. He was issued with a new handset but has the same problem.

It's kinda weird. It also sometimes does the same thing when he's out and about, but sporadically.

Anyone have a clue what could be causing this? He works from home at least twice a week so it's causing a serious disruption at the moment and both his company and Vodafone don't seem to have a clue.

I handle my companies mobile phone contract (with Orange, although I've dealt with Vodafone in the past) and I had this happen recently to one of my users. The problem was traced to a faulty sim card eventually (after replacing the handset, etc). Orange issued a duplicate sim and all was well.

Thanks Oleron, I will tell him to request a new SIM. If it's not that, I'll report back!

Phil, no. Just...no.

are you sure Phil isn't on to something?

I mean, i KNOW, for a fact, that there are some very jealous people out there..

Yes, i'm looking at your rebecca.. we know you want her for yourself.

Well my thought would be that you have had some heavy useage in your local system at times when he was at home, and possibly some loss of local coverage. Towers can only handel so many different calls at the same time and are some times maxed out.

Nah, it's a government conspiracy to annoy skeptics.

Each mobile cell can only ever handle a finite amount of traffic, so whilst the mobile phone may indicate good network coverage (i.e. plenty of bars on the display). The cell itself can be overloaded, hence the "Network Busy" message. Text meassages take a much lower bandwidth than voice messages, so they can often get through when voice can not.

If your local "tower" or mast (as us in the UK like to call it) has recently been upgraded to 3G then this maybe the issue, there is some, albeit anecodtal, evidence that the 3G sites have less load bearing capacity than the old GPRS sites.

I work for Vodafone, if this is causing your hubby a serious problem drop me a PM and I can get someone to look into for you.

Thanks

Nero

build up of earwax maks cellfone signels go bad maybe he should carry full box of qtips with packet to make cellfone work.

Nero, that is a very kind offer, thanks :) I'll test the Wifi as per Toby's suggestion (although it's not a 3G phone, it's an old housebrick), and tell him to get a new simcard as well, and if there's still no joy, I'll get back to you.

I'll tell you what it's like:

You know that episode of Futurama where Fry and Bender move into the great apartment, and Bender's antennae is interfering with the TV? He walks into the room and the TV goes off, he walks out and it comes on.

It's like that. Hubby gets home, his phone stops working.

I have started wearing a tinfoil hat. THEY are obviously coming for us.

So you're saying it has something to do with robots?

You might check to see if the building (or one nearby) has a cell booster too.

Anyone know about mobile phones?

I know they are an abomination unto the Lord!
I know teenagers should have their thumbs amputated and their ears plugged with molten lead to stop them using the damn things.
I know people who use them on trains would be better to have a millstone cast around their necks and be thrown into the uttermost depths of...
(*Looks around. Sees nobody for miles*)

Well go away then! See if I care.

(*Stomps off, muttering*)

(*Stomps back again*)
ETA-"It works when he leaves the apartment."
Every time? Immediately outside the door? Outside the building? In a 50 yard radius circle around your apartment?
Homeland security have installed a TV detector van in your fridge.
Serves you right. Instruments of Satan.
(*Stomps off, scratching and cursing*)
