Any views on different parapsychology journals?

I'm thinking of subscribing to a parapsychology journal, but I'm not too au fait with their various reputations.

I've got online access at the moment to The Journal of Parapsychology, but I'm not wholly convinced about the Rhine Institute of Parapsychology of which the journal is a publication.

A psychologist I know has recommended The European Journal of Parapsychology, but again I'm not too sure about its actual standing, and it's attached to the Koestler Parapsychology Unit at Edinburgh Uni, which I know little about.

I'm looking for one which might have some mainstream respect, is peer-reviewed, which carries articles of import from a variety of approaches (including sceptical and otherwise), and basically isn't just a crackpot or hopelessly biased publication.

Reason is I'm studying clinical psychology, and for my doctoral thesis I'm thinking of looking at some issues relating to belief in the paranormal (possibly as regards specific mental disorders). Peripheral reason is, I'd quite like to keep abreast of new developments in the field of parapsych generally.

Anyone got any views on this? Or advice? Favourite or despised journals? Or simply any nice recipes?

Let me ask Richard Wiseman ...

Hmmm, yes, while you ask him, I'll have a quick look on his publications list at his site...

Apart from mainstream psychology journals, he's published in

Journal of Parapsychology
European Journal of Parapsychology
Journal of the Society for Psychical Research
Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research

So I'd probably think any of these would be fairly reputable, since Wiseman is a pretty reputable chap, and can afford to be discerning.

Thanks for the thought Paul. I'll look up Chris French and do a similar thing.

Wiseman says the only real choice is the Journal of
Parapsychology, although their production has become a bit spotty.

Brilliant, thanks for asking him Paul. And thanks to Wiseman.

I noticed production was a bit spotty, I emailed them to see if my electronic access was up to date and apparently we're still waiting for Vol 2 of 2004 to come out.

Any idea why Wiseman considers that one "the only real choice"? Don't want you to bug him, just wondered if he mentioned.

Fair enough, though as I said, he has published in several others.

Apart from JPara, he's most prolifically published in the Journal of the SPR - do I recall a thing about him resigning from the SPR or something though?

Actually, from a quick look on Google, I'm probably misremembering this strange diatribe from our friend Victor "Dammit" Zammit. Surely there's some libel in there somewhere? Or does he say "if" in just the right places...

Anyway, thanks again Paul, jolly helpful.

Zammit is such a card:

SOMETHING REALLY STINKS – AND THE BRITISH OUGHT TO WAKE UP TO CORRUPTION, THE ANTI-PSYCHIC CRUSADE BY THOSE IN POWER COWARDLY HIDING BEHIND THE FAÇADE OF FAIR MINDED SPR LEADERS.
