I have FF 2.0.0.4 running on Win98.

I have Quick Time Alternative and Windows Media Player plugins installed, and they test just fine with the tests linked here:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Testing_plugins

But sometimes when I have been on line for a few hours, I'll go to a page that uses one of these plugins, and FF will act as though it is not installed. However, immediately checking about:plugins still indicates that they are installed correctly.

Exiting and re-starting FF clears up the problem until next time.

Any ideas?

Get a copy of portable firefox and install it separately. It does not write anything to the registry and will not in any way affect your existing installation. If you wish it can be ran from a USB drive.

Voila! You now have 2 firefoxes, one in which you can test things, and another which is the one used for day to day applications. This is just a first step, because plug ins and extensions can interact detrimentally with each other. But it gives you a clean slate to test with, which is essential.
