Anthem to Stop Selling Child-Only Policies

Yikes... the quotes in that article are pretty disingenuous. Anthem is stopping selling new child-only policies. Children can still get coverage under family policies, and existing child-only policies are still in place. They're hardly denying coverage to "all children."

This was a pretty obvious step and I sincerely doubt politicians didn't know they were going to do this (unless said politicians are horrendously stupid). If we require insurers to take children with pre-existing conditions, and don't have any mandate for everyone to buy policies for all children, no insurer in their right mind is going to offer a child-only policy. What makes sense -- and what the insurers did -- is to cover children under family plans.

I get that insurers make great villains (especially in election season) but this is just silly.

More squirming as the hammer comes down. Still can't blame them. And any congressman who couldn't see this coming is so stupid as to not deserve their job.

Nobody said it was. This is troubling. And California wants to ban Blue Cross from operating in the state for five years if they don't cover kids? I don't see any good coming from that.

Oh, and insurers like Blue Cross did offer child-only policies. But not anymore.

Nobody said it was.

From the article:
insurers would rather deny coverage to all children than have to cover some that happen to have pre-existing conditions,” said Anthony Wright, Executive Director of Health Access California, the statewide health care consumer advocacy coalition.

And this is just it -- they are covering kids. They just aren't going to sell new policies that cover kids individually, which was a niche market anyway.

This is just political grandstanding. They're not going to ban Blue Cross from California -- particularly given that they aren't doing anything illegal. They passed a law to reform the health insurance system and that is what is happening. Things are going to change -- that was the entire point of the system. Once the individual mandate goes into effect, this will all be moot anyway.

That's what I said: given the new rules mandating they accept children with pre-existing conditions, no insurer with any sense is going to offer a child-only policy.

It's California, though. I've lived here all my life. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they did.

Didn't California learn its lesson with electricity a few years back, with respect to mandating corporations hemorrhage cash with no way to recoup it?

Anthem to Stop Selling Child-Only Policies

Clearly this is a plan to lower the population. However, by penalizing the parents with retarded babies, this will surely draw the attention of Moosezilla from Wasilla, and she will fight for Anthem to insure the retards.

Won't someone please think of the tards?
