In a situation recalling the recent death of Terri Schiavo in Florida, an 81-year-old widow, denied nourishment and fluids for nearly two weeks, is clinging to life in a hospice in LaGrange, Ga., while her immediate family fights desperately to save her life before she dies of starvation and dehydration.

Mae Magouirk was neither terminally ill, comatose nor in a "vegetative state," when Hospice-LaGrange accepted her as a patient about two weeks ago upon the request of her granddaughter, Beth Gaddy, 36, an elementary school teacher.

I've tried to find more information from real news sources about this case and can't. All of my searches simply lead to blogs that simply repost the article. At the forum I read this at "bullshido.com" one of the posters lives locally and says that there is no local news coverage of this. He also claims to have called the hospice and recieved confirmation that no such person is at the hospice.

I've sent an e-mail to snopes.com and they've thanked me for the heads up. Hopefully, that means they'll be investigating if this is just a fabrication or not.

It's my opinion that this is indeed a fabrication based on my findings that it's only sourced on tabloids and pro-lifer blogs.

There's no mention of this whatsoever in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

I found a story about it on Lagrangenews.com, though.

Something smells weird, though...Read the article to see what I mean.

I don't get it, according to the LaGrange article, the family settled this matter and are awaiting the recommendations of the physicians.

Yet.. the article still goes on about how the "prolife" party in this debate is complaining.

Because, as Rouser constantly reminds us, the "prolife" crowd are more concerned with "moral outrage" and less concerned with facts.

Yep, they are already calling for a protest-fest at this hospice. What a bunch of morons.

I don't count worldnetdaily.com as a news source. The website is at the level of some high school kid writing garbage/lies on a geocities.com server.

Questioninggeller, I agree with you about world net daily, however, the pro-life a-holes seem to disagree. They've mounted an entire campaign based on this article. This is why I'd like to find out if this is actually a fabricated event or not. It would be nice to debunk this and shove it in the pro-lifers' faces.

Why? Most of them haven't even heard of it. Now I supose we could try and put together a pro pro-choice fake get it into a simular news source and wait to see how many pro-choicers buy it then compare the two groups.

Now there is this:

http://soundingthetrumpet.blogspot.com/2005/04/kenneth-mullinax-interview.html

On the other hand I'm from the UK where do not resusertate orders have been know to mistiriusly appear on people's medical notes.

A search on the name turned up this:

Blog Interview

. . .where the writer indicates that he interviewed the nephew involved. It also points to a transcript from a radio interview given by the same family member:

Transcript .

Your mileage may vary.

Well, it looks like a settlement was made that the decision come to by 3 doctors will be binding. However, the nephew claims that the doctors haven't come up with a decision yet.

At any rate, this looks totally different than the Schiavo case. I think the judge in this case made big mistakes at the beginning of this case. I wouldn't call this an activist judge, just one that didn't have all the facts.

Can a dissected aorta be treated with chemicals?

Update:

Mae Magouirk, the 81-year-old Georgia widow over whose medical care a family tug-of-war reminiscent of the Terri Schiavo case has been raging, has been transported from the hospice in LaGrange, Ga., to the University of Alabama-Birmingham Medical Center, according to her nephew, where "she is receiving food, fluids, cardiac care and neurological help."

Under the terms of an April 4 court order, Magouirk's medical treatment was to be decided by three cardiologists tasked with deciding what treatment would be best and where it should take place.

Now, the pro-lifers aren't happy to just have a victory, they have to ensure that their conspiracies about this case live on.

I don't know why they can't just admit that, perhaps, the lady was never starved.
