Who is always kind, cheerful, and loving. And spreads disinformation like it's fact. And she's a lawyer by profession.

She told the class that:

-breathing oxygen burns calories, and that is the PRIMARY way people lose weight

- most diseases in the human body take place in the waist down, but exercising the lower body would reduce ailments like cancer and bladder dysfunction

- women who are having their period should not invert their bodies, as it could damage their chakras

-eating meat is not healthy. Organic is the way to go. Cleanse that body!

I came to yoga class to stretch and relax, and instead get all keyed up... rar!

Ugh, try taking a t'ai chi class, it is as or more worse in terms of woo-woo-ism.

I've literally heard everything. :)

I always say to myself 'Can't exercise/martial art just be exercise/martial art?'

Why don't you tell her, "I came to yoga class to stretch and relax, and instead you got me all keyed up. You don't get me telling you how to do law, do you? So don't you tell me how to do medicine."

Change yoga classes. Seriously. I had to shop around to find an instructor who wasn't too crazy. It is a wonderfully relaxing exercise if you can find the right atmosphere for it.

And, as an aside, I do find inversions during my period feel uncomfortable. I'm not sure why. But pelvic stretches (like wheel or bridge pose) relieve my cramps.

If you have tv, the Inhale program is excellent.

(and wayyy too hard for me!)

I take it as an omen that you named yourself after it.

I named myself after the martial art, not after the horrible way some attempt to describe it.

Go learn some shotokan and judo, then go back and hit her with a mae-geri followed by a gyaku-zuki. When she's down, finish her with a tsukkomi-jime.

I can conceive of a way of viewing the metabolic pathways so that this is actually a fact.

Oxygen is the terminal electron acceptor and so might be said to be the "cause" of breaking down glucose and glycogen. On the other hand I was up way too late last night, so maybe it would be unwise to pay too much attention to me.

Rolfe.

And to be screamingly pedantic, when you breathe oxygen IN, you GAIN weight. Breathing CO2 and unmetabolised air out causes a (fleeting) weight loss. The trick is knowing when to stop. :D

(I know this is not what she was referring to, but it might keep her quiet for a minute.)

If you breath in pure oxygen that is going to do more damge to your cells so your body is going to have to use more energy to repair them.

Yes, it hit me the same way. Oxygen could be seen as one cause of substances (body fat, firewood, or whatever) being oxidized via either aerobic respiration or combustion. Ed only knows what the yoga instructor had in mind though...[edited to add: you certainly couldn't say it was the primary cause IMO, any more than you could say the primary cause of a fire is oxygen.]

Afterthought: It rather depends on how one interprets "primary", doesn't it? Somehow I suspect the yoga instructor didn't mean "most distal in the electron transport chain"! ;)

silly people. Yoga lady said when you breathe in oxygen it fills your lungs and filters out impurities, and when you breathe out it releases these impurities into the air. When you exercise your body breaks down energies ('energies') and when you breathe that is how your body gets rid of them.

so sayeth the Lawyer-turned-woo

And these "impurities" would be what, precisely?

Translation:

When you exercise your body breaks down glucose and glycogen (and some other stuff), to produce energy. This results in the generation of carbon dioxide, by reduction of the terminal electron acceptor. When you breathe out this is how your body gets rid of that.

Oh, you don't think that's what she meant? ;)

wow... Carbon Dioxide is so heavy that when you breathe it out you lose weight? Wow! Or maybe I should say woo! :D

So, if I breath out more, can I eat more donuts?

Ask her opinion about uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation for fat loss.

Actually, that is literally true.

Just not very much weight.

Nice one, El Greco.

Only, don't you burst into flames or something? :D

Actually, I seriously considered this as a possible explanation for the reports of spontaneous human combustion, until I saw the evidence that these were nothing of the sort.

Well, reportedly, the heavy stuff like DNP can fry your brain... people sleep with 3 fans pointing to their head and change clothes every two hours. Sounds like a lot of fun! :D
